Why this game will never work. A letter.

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:52 pm

Well I won't be playing it that's for certain. I am not a fan of having to pay-to-play or to purchase upgrades. Now, if Bethesda comes out with a DLC for Skyrim my chances of buying it are slim to none. I did that with Dragon Age Origins and was extremely disappointed with their DLC's. Never again.

I won't lie. I didn't read much of the OP. The whole "World of Warcraft" argument needs to be dropped. Everyone has heard it a million times by now, across many different MMO's.

However.

The simple harsh truth is that the problem we have here is that they've called this "The Elder Scrolls" Online. They're putting the name of a finely tuned, beautiful machine to something that, from the screenshots, looks nothing... at all... like what we have come to expect from the Elder Scrolls name.

And in a world of up and coming MMO's I think we all had such high expectations for a heavyweight contender as this franchise. But from the little I've seen.. this just looks miles... years in fact... behind its competition.

What a shame.

No it really isnt.

Can you elaborate as to why? This information was provided to them by Zenimax. Logic would dictate that they would put their best foot forward in the announcement of the game, and in the first article written about it.

343 didn't subscribe to that logic when talking about Halo 4.

As I said in a previous post, slightly above the one I'm quoting from you, the mods locked it, deleted some posts and reopened it. No need to get confused, it's quite simple.

That doesn't answer the question.

I'd agree on most points, Jensev. I believe that if zenimax continue with this studio investment that they will have serious losses.
The Elder Scrolls franchise is built upon the idea of free roam, role playing, equally balanced, in a fun hack & slash style gameplay.

Not only does this game breach on these ideals, but it comes from a studio that is not even of bethesda's own and It'll just look at milking the concept.

With that thought in mind, they'll no doubt proceed in shortcuts of lore, simplifying culture to make it more understandable and performing retcons.
Which could make this game to be a serious thorn in bethesda's side. Going about destroying the careful reputation they had garned over the years.

All in all I don't want to see this game in the retailers anytime soon. Zenimax either need to get their act together or drop the idea once and for all.

Sorry, must have missed it. I did read through a lot of the replies though, but I didn't see any familiar ones (probably the ones that were deleted), which is what threw me off. Cheers.

Myself I think it will work just fine. Lets give the game a chance first before saying it svcks. Remember how lots of people said Skyrim was gonna svck but it turned out to be pretty good?
Couldnt agree more with you.

I don't think they've put any wrong feet forward. The "community" is jumping to a lot of conclusions based on an article that really didn't go too in-depth about actual gameplay mechanics.

Also, it's worth noting that Blizzard was met with an onslaught of criticism when they announced World of Warcraft.

The thing is, I'm not so much comparing the looks and feels of the game. My point was more based around the idea that the idea behind making this MMO (draw players away from other MMOs) is completely flawed and would mean the death of this game.
That is what my points and this thread is based around.

It's not a so much a complaint about that it isn't and Elder Scrolls game or a WoW clone, it's more about why it would be a financially bad idea to launch this MMO based around drawing in people from other MMOs.

I don't think they've put any wrong feet forward. The "community" is jumping to a lot of conclusions based on an article that really didn't go too in-depth about actual gameplay mechanics.

The same reply I can give to this. I don't criticize the gameplay mechanics or the graphics. I criticize the idea behind this MMO and give plenty of reasons why it's a bad idea.

We don't know if there will be a subscription fee, if there is they may have a problem, but if not I do not see them stopping after 5 years, becasue that would be even more of a financial loss than releasing the game and failing.

Well Game Informer did an tremendous bad job of representing The elder scrolls online, if zenimax did not intend to copy/paste some popular mmorpgs. But I agree the few scratch of information we currently got is hardly representative for the final product. There is a lot of tweaking to do, testing and polishing.

Zenimax might add things in the game, what makes the "hotbar based" game bearable. Perhaps they use a form of V.A.T.S similair to Fallout 3 but with an target moving. Perhaps they will give some form of mods (people making levels that they stream from their own computer) Yet this is all speculation.

It's change that players never like, You heard the complains from Morrowind all the way to Skyrim. And it will continue until Alduin and eat the complaints and Tamriel with it.

The OP makes a very bold statement with so little information. Best to wait several months and have much more information in hand as well as some hands-on with the game before making such a grand prediction. The game may actually be fun even if not your idea of a perfect TES MMO.

But can you, based on the information we have now and the points that I made, deny anything in my post?

Yes.

1. The developers have only said that some mechanics are similar to WoW. Even the scant description provided in Game Informer shows that there will be some radical differences.

2. At no point do the developers ever say that they're trying to draw people away from WoW.

Both of these points are conclusions you jumped to on your own, based on one sentence.
