Question aimed at ponies.

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 9:50 am

So this isn't a hostile thread, or excluding other platforms 'for kicks', it's because I have a question about PSN content.

So I've really been having fun with older, classic games from PSN, and there's so many varieties to choose from, the question is, if you guys know any games to recommend buying feel free to share it.

The genre I want isn't specific, but I AM a little high and tight when it comes to JRPGs, but they are not excluded. I like 'big' games, ones where there is a lot of fun to be had while playing. (Yes I know fun is subjective to taste), but I enjoy games with a variety of options, and great story/fun. I'm really considering a new RPG or something.

Any recommendations?

At least two of them are, my friend has them.
He may have Medieval on PC though from a less than credited source, but I think it's on PSN

Oh yeah they're on there also:
Parasite Eve's 1&2.
Final Fantasy V, VI,VII, VIII and IX.
Breath of Fire IV (I think the 3rd one's better <_< ).
Resident Evil 1,2 and 3.

Wait, the FFs you listed aren't the 8-bit ones are they? Because those I liked, the more 3-D esque ones I found to be boring.

Also, what exactly is Breath of Fire? Isn't that a JRPG? (I THINK I saw it on PSN, but I didn't really look at it.

As for RE, I dunno, it somewhat appeals, but in general, shooters put me off due to their confinements in terms of things to do.

Yes, and a good one as well. I agree the third one is better, but apparently that's not up on PSN.

I'm not sure you'll find many non-JRPGs on PSN, at least with the classic games.

Well, the thing is, I'm not AGAINST them, but growing up on JRPGs, I just got tired of being set in a Japanese style quasi-European world to stop it from a demon entity. There's only so many times one can do that before it gets old.

Also, do you know about that Parasite Eve game? I read about it on PSN before and that one did catch my eye. Do you or Reaper know how well it plays? Like how's the gameplay (Gameplay as in controls, UI, etc)?

What I like about Breath of Fire IV is how the antagonist has more character development than in most JRPGs I've played. Gameplay switches to his perspective a few times throughout the game, and you can see he's not the typical Sephiroth "cold blooded killer" type, he develops his own moral conflicts as well.

The gameplay in Parasite Eve is pretty similar to a modern FF game of the time. You have random battles, weapons/items, magic, stats, all the usual.

The battle system is more tactical though, you have to move your character around the battlefield to get in range for your attacks and avoid the enemy attacks.

6 and under are the 8-bits. Breath of Fire is a JRPG, but unlike most it tends to frequently branch out and try something new. 1 and 2 are more along the lines of "classic" JRPG's, but 3-5 will get some arguments on what's good/bad because they're pretty different from each other. 4 is one of my favorite JRPG's.

Skimming through lists of what's available on the network, recommendations include: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Suikoden, Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, Resident Evil 3, Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3, Silent Hill.

If you're in North America, then I highly recommend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suikoden_(video_game) from PSN (for some reason it's not available on EU PSN). Sure, it's a JRPG, but it got a very good story.

Konami just need to release Suikoden II on PSN too, together with the first game on EU PSN :P

Hah, funnily enough, that's another one that seemed interesting to me. And the WIki does make it seem very appealing.

@Rhekarid- I dunno about RE or SH, horror games just bore me for some reason. They focus on the scare that I find the plot is kind of weak. But eh, I just never found it that interesting to try. Then again, I've said the same about Minecraft and Harvest Moon, and I love both.

@Narmy- Interesting, I'll have to look into them some more then. :o

I don't understand why they haven't, considering the http://www.amazon.com/Suikoden-II-Playstation/dp/B00001X50L/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1332348547&sr=1-1 it commands for being so desirable.

FF V and VI are like the ones from snes days (16bit).
FF VII, VII and IX are from the PS1 days (The 3D ones).

Breath of Fire is a JRPG where the main character can transform into different Dragons and you go on an adventure to kill a goddess except the 2nd game you killed a god in that game. I've only played the first three games No idea how the forth game is.

Crash Team Racing, if you can get some split screen partners. And, of course, all of the other Crash and Spyro games, most notably Crash 2 and Spyro 2. Journey isn't a classic by any means, but I highly suggest that masterpiece.

Sorry my sentence structure wasn't the best, but something was telling me that people were getting a bit tired of my lists...

Spyro, a thousand times Spyro.

Get the first three (I don't know if any others are on PSN), and play them in order, with an open mind. You will not regret it.

For PSN originals there's one turret defense game that isn't too bad and requires some strategy, but I forget the name atm.

As for PS1 titles Castlevania Symphony Of The Night is pretty dang good if it's only $10 on the store atm. Has a sweet action style RPG feel to it where you level up, gain items, find spells, etc... . RE1 is up there and so is RE3, but i'm not sure if RE2 is up there.

I'm still waiting for them to put out Einhander which is a great fast paced shooter style game. svcks they canceled the sequel to Einhancer, but what ya gonna do.
