You don't even need to read perks to decide this.

Light, more mobile, more movement, easier sneaking.

Heavy, limited movement, good defense, lots of noise.

Purely depends on one's preference

While both types have perks to make them weigh nothing, Light Armor gains access to that perk earlier than Heavy Armor does. This allows you to carry more stuff in your inventory. For some reason I'm always over-encumbered when dungeon diving.

My choice was mostly based on role-playing aspects. I envisioned my character as a mobile and agile weapon master.

How do you think that relates to weapon selection?
I read another post saying that light armor is necessary if one chooses to be an archer.

It is not necessary. You can be anything and everything.

Nothing is required to do anything, you can wear any kind of armor you want to go along with anything you want. It's probably preferred since you can be a lot more stealthy but it's all up to you.

You can sneak in heavy armor as there is a perk in heavy armor tree that reduces noise and in the sneak tree too. So you could play a sneaky barbarian or some kind of hybrid.

Edit: Playing myself one. Archery, Heavy Armor, One hand, Sneak, Some crafting too. As you gain perk points til level 81 playing such kind of hybrid is no problem. (Verfied with console)

Well, if you choose heavy armour you know that you can't run away from things easily, you can't really dodge stuff, but you can take lots of hits. So if you're an archer with weak melee skills you'll be caught with your pants down often, but if you're using 2handers and archery, you don't really need to move away or towards from enemies, so you might as well go for durability.

Basically, use common sense and think about how fights with your character would look like vs. archers/melee/mages.
