Share pony through laptop

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 2:50 am

Okay so I was wondering if there is a way to share the internet I use on my laptop with my phone and Kindle. I know I can share my connection when I'm using WiFi, all I do is click 'share my internet' and it acts like a hotspot. The problem is I use WiMax on my laptop to connect to Clear mobile broadband (without using a modem). Turning WiMax on disables WiFi so I can't share the connection. I downloaded ConnectifyMe but that works in the same way, it tells me I have to turn my WiFi on which disables WiMax and my connection to Clear.

Is there any affordable hardware that can make this happen? I know I can buy a Clear hotspot and use it to connect everything, but they're $100 and I head to my first duty station next month where I should be able to get cable, so then I'll just get a wireless router or whatever I need to do to connect everything.

Just curious if there's a way to make this happen.

Thanks.

Why not just re-enable the wifi?

control panel -> Administrative tools -> Device Manager -> re-enable your wifi (should be in networking)

How is your laptop connecting to Clear? usb dongle?

You cannot use WiFi and WiMax at the same time. I am connected to Clear via WiMax which is internal to the laptop, and turning it on automatically turns WiFi off. Turning WiFi on turns WiMax off.

See I'm sharing the connection with my Xbox via an ethernet cord, however my Kindle and phone would need to connect via a WiFi signal. I wasn't sure if there's something I can buy that plugs in via USB that can broadcast the signal or something, or even something to plug an ethernet cord into which would share the signal. Either way I'd only do it for under $30 considering I only need it for a few weeks.

In that case, you'll need any router that supports DD-WRT firmware, flash that on the router, and set it to http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point mode. Plug that into your laptop, then enable Internet Connection Sharing between the clearwire adapter and the Ethernet adapter.

So I bought a cheap D link wireless router but can't seem to do anything with it.

I don't understand why I can't just have it use the internet through my laptop to create wifi. My Xbox does it, so I plug my laptop into the LAN port on the router and get nothing. Same for internet port. I have it set up to share the connection.

I've tried to run the D Link setup disc but it keeps telling me 'your router must be set to the default username and password' to proceed. It tells me to restore the default settings and try again. I push the reset button on the router until the lights flash and try again but get the same thing.

So is this not possible?

I already told you what you need to do. Without internet connection sharing you are in bridged or ad hoc mode, which has a host of issues. Also without seeing the router as a WAP you run the risk of subnet conflicts.

I went to that website and it looked wayyy too complicated.

But I did get it figured out and working. All I had to do was login to the router and change its IP address and turn off DHCP and then share the internet connection via LAN and boom, it now works and I can watch movies on my Kindle Fire :)

Which is more or less what the page I linked to explains how to do (as well as all the side stuff to guarantee everything works flawlessly). You got lucky your router allows you to put it in switch mode and maintain wireless. A lot of cheapo routers don't, which is why I suggested DD-WRT. Also are you using internet connection sharing? If not I suggest you set it up as it's significantly better than windows bridge or ad hoc options for sharing internet (a the name would imply).

Um in my network settings I just click on the WiMax connection and click properties and select 'allow other networks to use this internet' and select LAN and that shares the connection. Seems to work fine.

That's internet connection sharing, hence why it says using ICS one the bottom of that window :P
