You get the skeleton key as part of a thieves guild quest, but you have to turn it in to complete the quest. That means you get to keep it for as long as you're willing to postpone the completion of the thieves guild quest line.

What a rip off? So the lockpicking skills still needed? Or alteration unlock?

if u level up ur lockpicking enough u can get a perk so they dont break

Its going to be fallout lockpicking just exit out when your pick is about to break...In fallout I break like two bobby pins in the entire game.

I can't provide you the images I've seen, but I can confirm that the Skeleton Key is in the game. It's part of a Thieves Guild quest and must be turned in at the end of that quest. Whether you get it back afterward I don't know.
