How to disable this dynamic screen brightness feature?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:34 am

I have to say that I am quite pleased with Skyrim, yet there is one feature that I find rather annoying.

If you move your view quickly you will notice that the brightness of the scene will change all the time. You can observe this well when you face a bright surface or light source (for example snowy ground in the night) and then quickly move your view to a darker surface, for example the night sky. What you will notice is that for a short moment the darker surface will turn very dark or even completely black. Move your view back to the brighter surface or lights and for a short moment the screen will be a lot brighter and then settle back to a normal brightness.

Yes, I know what this is supposed to simulate but at least I think this is completely annoying. Is there any way to disable this? If have been playing with the Ini-file settings but so far I didn't find any option to get rid of this.

The feature you're describing is called HDR. Dunno about Skyrim, but in Oblivion this could be turned off in the settings (set it to bloom).

It simulates how your eyes adjust to varying light levels by scaling the apparent brightness so you can see better in the dark and to prevent snow blindness

A pity, I don't seem to find a way to disable or reduce it.

Dear Bethesda, please add an option to at least reduce HDR strength.

it is something like bdrawhighdynamicrange=1 in your skyrimprefs.ini file, switch to zero, if you are comfortable with that.

Already tried that but I could not see any difference.
