Memory Limit

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:11 pm

Open skyrim.ini and modify these values (they are and category may not exist at all, add new):
[Papyrus]
iMinMemoryPageSize=100000
iMaxMemoryPageSize=5000000
iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=1800000000

I found this on the nexus site, but i cant seem to find out what numbers i should set there, 'dunno if these numbers are the standard ones or how it should be, 'Im not so good at this stuff'' but looked like an good way to kill som lag :D

so.
If im using windows 7 x64. got 8G of 1600mhz ram and an Geforce 560ti, what should i set the numbers on?

thx!!

I'm not sure what those settings will actually do, but there's a better way. Look up Large Address Aware. There's a way to toggle Skyrim to use more RAM (and many have reported a significant boost to their performance afterward). Right now it's only using 2GB of RAM, but you can increase that to 3 or 4.

Here's a link to the 4GB tutorial at Skyrim Nexus: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=134

I haven't even seen Skyrim go over 1 GB in memory usage yet...

My usage averages somewhere between 1.4 and 1.7 GB

1800000000 bytes = 1716 megabytes just about... that seems about right. so looks like default setting is to use max of 1.67ish gigs of ram... pretty lame. maybe try changing this to see what happens and if game will use more.

I got this by doing 1800000000 / 1024 = 1757812.5 KB / 1024 = 1716.6MB? i'm not sure if my math is right but seems close.

i'd probably just try changing max allocated ram and not touching page size since not sure what that means.

EDIT: I read on some other site about the settings. seems this is settings to use to increase memory ussage but aparently you don't want to exceed these #'s and that by default game only uses like 700megs? i don't understand why those #'s are so low.. I right now get crashes a lot when i play for a while and in other games I've been able to stop crashes by increases memory game will use, probably just prolonging the crash due to memory leaks or something but i'm desperately trying to find a way to stop crashing in my game since i'm tired of playing missions multiple times over and over and having to hit save button every minute. I'll see if this does anything for me. i already got latest drivers. decent computer and 580gtx card, 6 gigs ram i7 quad cpu no reason my game should be crashing so often.

Hmmm, I was wondering about this as well... I have i5 2500K with Win7x64, 8G of 1333mhz ram (2x4G in dual channel) and an GTX550Ti. If the basic settings are really capped in the .INI at 1.7G, I would love to know if I can somehow increase it to utilize the maximum available memory without destabilizing the rest of my system.

I mean, allowing Skyrim to use 6G of my 8G should do something nice; yes? :P

Also, Zengrath; there should be no reason for you to crash so often. With my system I can play for hours upon hours without any problem. I do get the rare CTD now and then; but usually I can play from dusk till dawn.

*wave* Nice to see some more old schoolers (and with a promotion no less!)

Did you check out that 4GB tutorial I linked from Skyrim Nexus? I haven't tried it myself (done with the game for the time being until more patches/mods are released), but several people have reported it greatly improved their performance on Skyrim and other games, especially if you've got the specs to handle it - which it looks like you do.

I 'm not 100% sure if all 32bit exec. behave this way but both the OB CS and the G.E.C.K. crash when they hit 1.8gb ram. Making them LAA solves this so it's my belief that the tool set has no limiter on how much memory it uses and when it runs out it crashes. Making the games LAA (OB and FO3) had no effect on how much the game uses so I think you would need to make Skyrim LAA before you raise those numbers but even then there is no guarantee the engine will actually use it though without adding more content to the game world.

For Oblivion simply using the LAA patch did little, if anything. It was when the Oblivion Stutter Remover (OSR) was paired up with the LAA patch that performance boosts were being noticed. OSR replaced the heap (I know nothing about it so I'm going to guess it's some sort of memory allocation table), which allowed users to take advantage of the extra RAM available to the LAA enabled Oblivion.
