Constant freezing. please help. NVIDIA

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:37 pm

Ive been searching these forums for awhile without an account looking for an NVIDIA fix to all the stuttering freezing in the beginning of the game. now i have found tons of ATI fixes for it but not a single NVIDIA one, also ive seen sooo many nvidia fixes that only fix texture issues witch i have yet 2 experiance because of the freezing. Another thing to add is that my comp isnt the greatest thing on the market thats for sure but it shouldnt have a problem running this game, also a pretty new install of windows so i havent bogged it down with crap at all. any help would be greatly appreciated, or atleast the info if its actually fixable or not.

One thing that really helped was uninstalling logitech software, for either your keyboard or G series mouse. Other than that going back to AMD 11.8 drivers but that won't help nvidia users.

alright so i basicaly figured it out
my cpu is using like 90% at all times so i got rid of a bunch of junk running and its alittle better with stuttering constantly but not complete freezing
the thing is i have a quad core and i should be able 2 run this fine. im thinkin its only using 1 core like others have stated, any fix for this?

Not sure how "good" your fix is - do you still have screen tearing and texture 'popping' or "mash potato" textures?

I would take a look at these articles if you haven't already, I hope they fix your issue. For me this first link fixed all my problems and now Rage is actually quite enjoyable.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2156747 (for you I would recommend Mid or probably Low-end settings)

There is another one from Nvidia:
http://www.geforce.com/News/articles/how-to-unlock-rages-high-resolution-textures-with-a-few-simple-tweaks

What I would recommend you try is and use the "Low-end" config from the first link and add these lines (if you have at least 1g of VRAM):
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizevmtr "8192"

Good luck - and make sure you ENABLE GPU TRANSCODING (GPU transcoding from what I gather is supposed to INCREASE the demand on your CPU, so if you resolved the 90% issue (this game is VERY low on system demands, my system runs HOTTER while playing Starcraft 2 ffs) then you should be alright).

alright the problem im having isnt the texture poping or anything like that i can live with that. my problem is the game is unplayable because of constant stuttering because it uses allllll my cpu. now i have a quad core and this game demands a dual core. i dont see why its not running properly. if someone could please help me fix the cpu usage problem i would love this game, because aside from that everything is awesome.

Hello there young man. The problem is not game related. Do not look for a fix for the game. The problem is your Operating System. Your PC is probably trying to block the game from the internet or your antivirus software is viewing the game as malicious script (and trying to kill it). The reason your CPU is running at 99 or 100% is not because of the game. You could try uninstalling the game (restart computer after) and re-installing it. The 100% CPU usage is probably from some antivirus software. You need to search for the problem in your task manager and find the offensive program. Maybe your hard driave is going bad and the CPU is having trouble 'reading' the disc. My point is that "The Game" is not where you should be looking for answers. Check your task manager for the program that is using the system resources.

thank you for trying to answer but there is nothing malicious in my computer. as i stated above its pretty much a fresh install of windows. I have not even had the time to install anti virus software yet and i have tryed disabling firewall/windows defender in processes there is nothing but rage and ofc windows explorer so on. i even tryed installing this program called game fire witch disables unused services and programs while playing. bottom line there is nothing running that is slowing me down. the three options im down 2 that i feel could be the problem are these.

1. Quad Core 2.33GHz just isnt good enough.

2. I have 2 dust my comp out and maybe get an increase off that.

3. or Rage just isnt using more then 1 of my CPU cores.

if you or anyone else thinks these could be the issue please say so... any other possible solutions are also welcome but dont say i have something running please because i am not that stupid.

OK then, well I still say it's not the game causing the CPU to run at 100%. I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again, but for now lets continue with the PC and see if we can optimize performance any. Set your resolution to something like 800x600 and play the game in windowed mode (turn off fullscreen). With the game running, right click the task bar and start task manager. Click on the "Processes" tab and look at the far right 'mem usage'. Whatever program is causing the system to hang will be using the most memory. Now the next likely candidate for trouble besides antivirus or firewall stuff, would be video driver. But it could also be audio driver causing the hang. By looking at the task manager you should get a hint as to what is causing the problem. I have Nvidia and I'm using the V275 driver and it works fine. The latest is 280 and there's a beta that is 285 or something ... as for the CPU 2.3 dual core should be enuff CPU but I think the requirements say 3.0 ghtz? (You see I'm at work and I don't have time to check everything for you.) Did you try using a low resolution and low graphics settings? Minimum GPU is Nvidia 9800, do you meet that requirement?

So use the task manager to determine what software is causing the system to 'hang'. That will lead you to the culprit of what needs to be tweaked in order to run the game smoothly.
Hope that gets ya runnin'.

thats just the thing... nothing is using memory except for rage. i had 2 exit a bunch of stuff inorder 2 just get it runnin to a playable standpoint. and memory usage never goes above 2.7 out of 8 gb. also the only thing in the task manager that says its using any cpu at all is Rage. if there is hidden stuff thats not showing then i dont know what. but in the task manager not one thing is above 00 except rage witch is at 47 while idleing while playing it spikes up to 90. and yes i have tryed lowering the settings reolution windowed gpu transcode all of it. im not the kind of person who has a little trouble and looks for forums i tryed to fix myself the best i can. and i originaly had the latest nvidia drivers then went to the betas to try and fix it and still no change. and yes i hit the minimum requirements for the GPU i have a 550 ti. like i sayd its obvious cpu maxing because it runs perfectly smooth then it will freeze for 3 seconds and then i can play again and after i stopped anything using any cpu power it because sorta playable but not enough for me to continue playing because of the lag... i still think the game is only using one core.

k i like this it seems like it might work... but i want 2 know a couple things. first does it have 2 be in safe mode 2 do this. second what do you mean by whitelist. because i already did it without any firewall etc and ran as administrator.

im still getting slight texture popping but im not a [censored] so i cant tolerate it without an issue. plsu the freezing is still there but veeeery far between. infact ide say this runs as smooth as my 1st gen xbox 360 did, except with better graphics. but i am still very disapointed with bathesda after brinks release witch i was pumped for this cameo ut witch i was very pumped for both disapointing. pleeeeeaasseee bathesda go back 2 your old roots stick with what you know for skyrim. but i cant take 2 much away from this game the gameplay is awesome. you just need some crazy fixes and stuff to even play it. and aside from the bugs the id5 engine is pretty sweet. and thanks once again for helping me resolve my issue guys.

Well that didn't helped to me at all. Although I have noticed few days ago, when it freezes, the game is being not responding for a few secs every time. Had same thoughts as Gazerbeam, even turned off antivirus and firewall, but didn't helped. Actually the only thing that helped was turning on Rages compatibility on win98/me, but had really low fps just like before new drivers for Rage. So I'm out of thoughts at this point.

GPU transcoding REDUCES load on your CPU. If your video card supports it (i believe 500 series only), and your CPU only has 2 cores, then turn it on to reduce CPU strain. Basically, when you turn it on, it turns on CUDA transcoding, which your GPU can do a bit faster than the CPU. The drawbacks to CUDA is, while it may be faster, there is some image fidelity loss. So, if you have a Quad or Six core CPU, keep it off unless you're having problems with the game "lagging" or "stuttering".

And yes, this game will eat up CPU cycles on dual-core CPU's.

Also, try defragging your HDD if you haven't already. This can help with the texture streaming.

Yea especialy if you dont have a huge high end HDD... i remember letting my HDD get 64% fragmented before and at that point windows defragmenter wouldnt even defragg it at all. Get defraggler its free fast and awesome.
