Steam Gives No Install Options?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 7:24 pm

I have a 240GB SSD, and then a huge standard HDD. I have Oblivion and Morrowind, heavily modded, running on my SSD to take advantage of the awesome loading and streaming times it provides. All other games are installed through Steam onto the HDD. Steam can only install games onto the drive that Steam itself is installed on, as far as I'm aware.

I figured that since I would be purchasing the disc version of Skyrim, I would be able to install it to my SSD. But I wasn't even given the option. I agreed to the terms and conditions, punched in my Steam Activation Key, and the game started installing straight to the HDD.

Is there any way around this? This is going to be a killer when performance abusing mods start showing up... I really need to find a way to get this installed on my SSD, but moving my entire Steam directory isn't an option since I have so many games bought through Steam that I play regularly. Nowhere near enough space.

Thanks for reading ^_^

Simply copy your Steam directory with Skyrim in it to your SSD, problem solved. This won't stop you running Steam off your HDD if you leave a copy there.

You will need to download and configure Junction if you want to have your Steam games in multiple locations.

Hi there, i am not sure if i am allowed to post links in here, so i have split the URL up, there is a software i have been using with 100% success rate so far that splits my Steam games onto different HD, the software can be found here: stefanjones . ca

Not easily. Steam doesn't let you choose the directory. Depending on your OS, what you can do is after it's installed, close Steam, and copy the install directory over to where you Really Want it, and make a directory junction linking where steam wanted it installed and where you want it installed.
