So I'm now in the sixteenth? hour of struggling to get this to work.

OK So here's the deal, I go to install it from the disc, the Installation takes its sweet time but eventually fills up to 5510/5510MB and the Finish button pops up.
Now it brings me to the Steam page where I should be downloading an update starting at 5510/5735 but it only has a fraction of that to begin with.
Anywhere from 1500/5735 to 2500/5735, I've uninstalled and reinstalled it probably 8 times and each install gives a different seemingly random number to start the update from.

I thought that maybe it was just a display error and that it would be playable once the 225MB patch was downloaded so I let one that started at 2214/5510 start updating but after 7 hours of my terrible internet speed it passed 2450MB and looked like it wasn't stopping until it reached the end.

I dunno is this happening to anyone else? Is it the disc or what... I'm just completely out of ideas and I doubt EB Games will take the disc back or if that'd even help.
Obviously I could wait for the entire 5735MB to finish downloading but at my internet speed where 225MB is 7 hours that equates to several days.

I think you answered your own question... slow download = pain

It's not my download speed that's causing the Disc to only install a fraction of what it should.

I just uninstalled/reinstalled two more times, the first one gave me a starting update progress of 2200/5700 and the second 1300/5700.

I'm in the same boat. I've just bought the CD, and am amazed to find that I have to download 5000MB more info, which is going to take around 20 hours! Is this right??? Does everyone go through this process? I have ADSL broadband.

Perhaps it is because Bethesda's servers aren't up to the job?

I'd love to see anyone else's ideas and experiences.

Installed fine from DVD.
Steam just d/l the patch after installation.

Everyone I know who got the Disc started at 5510/5735 so what's happening to us definitely isn't suppose to happen.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue or not, but some people on other forums have mentioned having issues that were fixed with this method. Good luck!

Same [censored] is happening to me, waiting 2,5 hours now, for the last 25%..... The disc only installed 75%
