High-res mouse makes HUD mouse pointer (very) hard to use

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:48 am

I have a high-res Logitech G5 mouse, and in order to be able to aim in-game I need to set the sensitivity setting to a fairly low value. However, this causes two problems with the mouse pointer (the one you get when not running around in-game and aiming - i.e. when you press TAB):

- The sensitivity for the mouse pointer is too high compared to the standard Windows pointer, and it seems to be accelerated (which I disabled in Windows) or something.. It does not match the behavior of my mouse in Windows and every time I need to mess with stuff in my inventory or accept a mission I miss-click a lot and I have to readjust to it, which is very annoying

- When the sensitivity setting in the game is set low enough, another issue appears where slow mouse movement is completely ignored (in the menu - not in-game when aiming, which works fine in all cases). This is actually a bit weird because if I move my mouse at a speed above a certain threshold, it works fine (ish - there's still the issue mentioned above), but when I move it just slow enough, the pointer doesn't move at all (even if I move my mouse across my entire desk, if I do it slow enough, the pointer does not move).

I can work around both issues above by just setting my mouse to a normal DPI, and then upping the sensitivity setting, but then I have screwed up mouse sensitivity when I tab back to Windows or when I use the steam overlay.

id, bethesda, or whoever; please consider fixing these issues (or at least the second one), I really hate to have to switch to the lowest DPI setting, this is not what I bought this shiny G5 mouse for :(

PS: Is this actually the best place to bring this up? Are there other places to report issues/bugs with the game?
PPS: Does anyone know of a better workaround for this issue? Or maybe even a magical config fix? :P

We're all a bit shocked by id's decision to leave mouse acceleration and smoothing on by default in the game.

It's what happens when you design a game for a controller and then don't get someone to code and test the mouse input correctly.

Id, the company that invented PC gaming and 3d graphics in games can't even implement a mouse cursor that works properly. How the hell does this make any sense? I still can't tell if this game's release was some kind of bad dream I've yet to wake up from.

:sadvaultboy:

Commander Keen - perfect
Wolfenstein - perfect
Doom 1 and 2 - perfect
Quake 1,2,3 - perfect
Doom 3 - pretty damn good

...

(consoles come along)

...

Rage - epic fail on pretty much every front

Hmm, well, I have to say that I haven't noticed any big issues with the way the mouse works for aiming - that seems to be mostly fine to me, it's just that cursed mouse pointer :/

I've actually noticed the same issue in Doom 3 as well, except there the interaction in the menu (where you actually had to do things with the mouse pointer) was very minimal so it never bothered me (just ocasionally load a game right after startup, or changing game settings on occasion). With rage I find myself checking my inventory a lot and it really bugs the hell out of me :(

My guess is they tested the PC version plenty (Though the graphic driver "clusterf*ck" as Carmack called it might lead one to think otherwise :P), but.. perhaps not with high DPI mice

Luckily my mouse has selectable DPI so I don't have too many issues with this.

Rather than everyone just complaining about the issue with the mouse, which has already been plainly stated more than once, does anyone know which config edits can help with acceleration and smoothing?

There are separate CVars for ingame/mouselook mouse sensitivity and for mouse sensitivity in the menus. They are, respectively, m_sensitivity and m_menu_sensitivity.

By default, m_sensitivity is set to 5.0 and m_menu_sensitivity is set to 0.35.

So the ideal solution would be to set m_menu_sensitivity to something lower. Unfortunately, that CVar seems to be locked, so you'll have to modify m_sensitivity upwards instead (and then lower your DPI accordingly).

To double the in-game mouse sensitivity from 5 to 10, you would do the following:
  • Open your Steam Library
  • Right-click on the "RAGE" entry
  • Select "Properties"
  • Select "Set Launch Options..."
  • Add this to the textarea:
    +m_sensitivity 10
  • Hit "OK", launch the game and glhf!

Change the "10" as necessary to get it where you want it.

It seems to be fixed now in the first patch.

Anyone else have it normal now after the first patch?

Hrm, no I still seem to have the same issues :(

Thanks for this tips by the way greppy, I sort of have it setup like that now, with lowered DPI and 'normal' mouse sensitivity setting. I'm a bit confused as to why they would lock the m_menu_sensitivity setting though, being able to adjust that would make everything right for me and still let me use the high DPI setting on my mouse (which I admittedly don't need that desperately) with gaming, but still, it would make the steam overlay and alt-tabbing to windows less painful if I could just always leave it at the highest DPI setting.

Yeah, ok nevermind. It's running fast again. Weird...it ran slower on first launch after the patch, now back to being accelerated.

Ok...not fixed. Sigh.

All this crap should be detailed in a bloody FAQ at the top of the page.. part of the problem is that half the users don't know what the damn console commands are.

The real problem is that this problem shouldn't even exist.

This game has no way of turning off Mouse Smoothing. That is unheard of! It's another BioShock nightmare with the mouse.

So what settings are you guys using then? The lower my DPI gets the worse it gets.

Step by Step please!

I only have trouble with the mouse in the menu btw.
