[RELz] Bomret's Skyrim Language Switcher

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 5:55 am

As per default Steam will delete all the localized files - like the voices - when you change the game's language and download the new language files instead. If you're switching languages often, like me, this is rather annoying because it always takes some time to download more than one gigabyte of files.

This small script will make it much easier to switch the ingame language in Skyrim. You will have to download the localized files of the languages you want only once (maybe repeat after an update).

You can download the current version from:
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=245
http://bomret.com/uploads/bomret_skyrim_language_switcher.zip

The tool works, but there are some quirks with Steam under some (rare) circumstances. If you'd like to help, take a look at the "Known bugs" section in the readme and write me your ideas.

I got some emails about the exact functionality of the tool. So here's a small tutorial:

The situation:
The game's language is english. You also want to have the german language to switch between them quickly.
You have unpacked the tool's zip file. Therein you'll find the folders "deutsch" and "english". Exactly what we need.

Note: You have to do the following steps only once (and to add new languages). After all the languages you want to use are present, just switch the language in Steam and start the script.

  • Copy the language files (see readme) from your skyrim/Data folder into the folder "english" inside the script's folder.
  • In Steam: Switch the game's language to German. Steam will now delete the english localized files and download the german ones. Wait until the download has finished.
  • Now copy the language files from your skyrim/Data folder into the folder "deutsch" inside the script's folder.

The script is now prepared to easily switch between english and german. The game's language currently is german. Let's switch back to english:

  • In Steam: Set the game's language to English. Steam will now delete the german files and begin to download the english ones. But we'll be faster...
  • Start the script. A command prompt will appear and show you the available languages. Enter "english" (without the quotes).
  • The script will now copy the english language files and start Skyrim.

If you don't want to enter "deutsch" or "english" every time you can rename the folders to anything you want, like "d" and "e". The script uses the folder names as identification. The main thing is that you know which folders contains what language.

Adding new languages is easy:
  • Create a new folder for the language inside the script's folder (e.g.: "italiano")
  • In Steam: switch the game's language to the desired one and wait until the download has completed
  • Follow the steps above. The script will find the new folder and show it as an option
