Spellswords & battlemages, Heavy or Light?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:32 am

So ive had a look through the forums and havnt really seen much discussion on this,

With the information & perk trees that are available what would be the best armor to be rocking as a spellsword?

and while vaguely on the subject, Smithing or Enchanting for your spellsword character?

Im still trying to decide myself.

Im either going to go with a Breton who wears Heavy, or a Bosmer that wears Light. Haven't decided. The Breton better fits the character I want to play both racial bonuses and RP, but im kinda partial to Bosmer, and their racial ability (animal companion) fits my RP a slight bit better than the Breton.

As far as Enchanting vs. Smithing, I'd like to do both, but both for RP and personal preference Im going Enchanting.

I'm thinking battle-mages are heavy armored and spell-swords are light armored.

That's just my opinion though, according to old TES classes Spell-swords are heavy armor and Battle-mages are unarmored.

I say neither and use alteration for shields, restoration for wards and healing. You would then definitively want enchanting to add some extra protection to your gear. This is how I'm planning my spellsword.

Altmer, with either light armor or robes. Definitely a spellsword vibe ... heavy on the offense, terrible on the defense. Glass cannon, really, which I'm fine with.

Skip both and go for alteration.

I've heard rumors that robes accelerate magicka regeneration, so it MIGHT be worth giving up armor for that. If not, you basically want restoration, conjuration, destruction, and heavy armor. Specializing in restoration gives you extra magicka regeneration from perks, and there's no reason to go light except movespeed and carrying capacity, which heavy armor perks take care of. Conjuration will give you the souls you need to maintain your equipment. Destruction is obvious.

You'll pretty much spank any combat encounter.

My thoughts exactly! :hehe: That's pretty much what my build will be.

I'm going to be playing a Nord Battlemage, who uses light armor. In my mind it goes spellSWORD (less magey) and BattleMAGE (more magey). I'm going light armor because of the boosts to stamina regen and the ability to mitigate 10% of all dmg, as well as aesthetic reasons.

It really just depends on what kind of mage you want to play. Essentially your options are:
1. No armor/robes - No magicka restriction, rely defensive spells.
2. Light armor - Minor magicka restriction, good balance between armor and magic power.
3. Heavy armor - Higher magicka restriction, best defense, lowest magic potential.

Is ot definatly confirmed that heavy armor restricts magicka regen more than light armor? havnt seen anything explicitly stating that fact.

At the minute im still swaying towards heavy armor and running an imperial, since every one of there racial bonus's are something im going to use (assuming you can still sword block while rocking sword/spell combo)

Enchanting

Would it be better to use Heavy or light armour for this?

EDIT:My race is Imperial btw

Light would be my armour of choice. You can max out the tree with 10 perk choices, and it weighs less than Heavy. Yes, you can make Heavy Armour weigh nothing, but to do so you have to take two useless perks before you can get Conditioning, which just isn't worth it in my opinion.

Everyone keeps talking about how heavy armor restricts your mana regen more then light armor, please tell where is the source. All I see is that robes give mana regeneration as stated on their tooltips

Heavy Armor would make the most sense for a Spellsword, but if you're a Battlemage you dont have to wear armor at all. A Battlemage isnt a warrior/mage hybrid they're a mage thats skilled in Destruction magic, hence the "battle" part in their name. Destruction is battle-orientated magic.

you cant block with oe sword if you have a spell in the other. you need to uneguip the spell in your other hand to block with the sword.

I agree, thats why my above skills are best suited to Heavy Armour. I don't use illusion and Alteration, mainly because I have those spaces for Smithing and Enchanting, but I should be alright.
