OT - A "Thief - The Dark Project" playthrough

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:33 am

Someone on the Thief 4 forums posted his playthrough of the first mission of the game "Thief - The Dark Project".

I hope it's ok with the mods and rules to go a but off topic, but we are talking about the best game in history here.

Do yourself the favour and watch it.

I responded to the guy who posted it on the Thief 4 forums. I just want to quote it.

This is the peak of PC gaming, way beyond entertainment, pure magic.

I love the realism of movement that you pull off, the fidelity of the look around (mouse), how you check the back swiftly, lean out before walking out the corner, a small glimpse out of a narrow window on the way through the hallway. As a realism orientated gamer I just get chills seeing this stuff. I get sick to my stomach seing console game videos played with a gamepad.
I love the part where you moved around the pillar to avoid being seen by the guard, the exact same situation occured to me when I played that mission for the first time!
Distracting the guard in the cellars with the arrow was very emergent.
I love the atmospheric ambient music. I love every bit of it.
Love how you let the key of the first guard near him! Love how you get actually spotted by the drunk guard and he just wonders who goes there. When I had to move past him I drew my sword expecting him to do something, but he just forgot about me the moment I went past him and I sheathed my sword after I went through the door behind him. [snip] immersive.

My playthrough back then was much slower though, also ghosted the entire series (feels most natural to me to play like that). Took about two hours for each mission. Nice and slow.

I actually planned to replay Thief 3, but really can't wait to get back to Thief 1. To me the most brilliant game in history of mankind. I wish I could erase my memory and re-experience that game anew.

I will post that video all over the forums I know.

This is the dishonored forum. Why would you post gameplay from Thief 4? It's a good game but still don't see why you need to post it here :)

We don't allow OT posts in the game sections - I've moved this to Community Discussion.

Also, please do not post content that bypasses the auto-censor, even if it's partially bleeped out.

It's ironic that one of the first games I'll play when I get my brand new monster PC is Thief: TDP. I can't play it on this one because of hardware issues. Truly sad, because it's one of my favorite games of all time, and if those people screw up 4, I will make a personal trip to all their residents and [censored] slap them with my [censored].

I played all thief games too. They are brilliant and deserve more attention.

Awesome game. I plan on replaying it before Thief 4 is out.

It's been almost a decade since my last playthrough.

Thief: The Dark Project:

The greatest game ever created by man. I know Bafford's mansion better than I know my own house. And I'd even say that Bafford's Scepter is in the bottom half of the Thief: TDP missions. I love the Sword, Return to Cathedral, Constantine's 2nd go-around, Mage's Guild (Gold, not TDP), and even the Sunken City better. It's no mistake that all of my email accounts are thievingtaffer.

I'm a huge fan of the Bonehoard and Lost City levels myself. Just the idea of combining stealth with creepy ancient tomb/city exploring is awesome, and that game pulled it off expertly. Though I can't find fault in any of the game's levels, as they're all intricately crafted and polished to a mirror sheen. Not only that, but I still claim to this day that Thief: TDP is one of the most terrifying games ever made. It still takes all of my wits plus more to get through some of those levels.

Hell, I almost feel sorry for Eidos Montreal. It's almost inconceivable to even try and fathom it, but there's probably more pressure on them to get Thief 4 right than there was for Deus Ex 3. If they opt for the Thief 2 route with fewer paranormal elements, they'll be criticized by a huge chunk of the fanbase (myself included), and they've also got the daunting task of one-upping the Shalebridge Cradle, which I think alone would consist of a combined effort normally put forth to complete an entire game.

Edit: Of course, I'm not saying Cradle was the best or scariest level in the series, but it would be blasphemous to claim that it was anything short of beautiful in design. Just sixy beyond all belief.

I'd be pretty hard pressed to come up with a better game, myself. Deus Ex and Thief 2 are the only ones that come to mind. Thief not only created an entirely new style of gameplay (1st person stealth sim) but it pulled it off perfectly. It's still the gold standard.

Thief has dominated my style of gameplay ever since I first played it. I sneak even in games where there is no stealth-detecting AI! :P

Haha, I can approve that! Now in my case it is not because of Thief, but because stealth gameplay is natural to me and I try to do it whenever I can in any kind of games. Only because of this, Thief felt like experiencing a form of reality. It went way beyond just virtual reality.

eidos montreal + thief........I don't know, they had the cool-kid 3rd person ludicrous kill cam slowmo manga aesthetic going in DX and defended it as ... immersive.
I can't see them do the game any justice without blatantly copying it - which would be boring. DX:HR had good story "elements" but the narrative itself was b-movie grade.
I never asked for this. They should just make a new game that respects those thief design philosophies, maybe in a steampunk inspired retro-futuristic world that resembles old London
with gameplay that caters to the butchering maniac as well as the methodical ghoster and make everybody happy......oh, already in development at a different studio....
back to 3rd person arrow auto-aim.

Yeesh, and I thought I was pessimistic.

with gameplay that caters to the butchering maniac as well as the methodical ghoster and make everybody happy

Actually, this is the exact mindset that ends up never pleasing anybody. As a Thief game, it should stick to the tried-and-true Thief formula, where Garret is not a superhuman by any stretch of the imagination; he is a thief and a damn good one. He only does things that interest and benefit him, so defending the city or merely saving a life is not something he would do on a whim. Thief is a dark game series where you, the player, are placed into the role of a master thief living in a bleak and unforgiving world full of paranoid, hateful people and monstrosities, and I love it for that. It is not a game about making choices or letting the player force their own morality code onto Garret's character, it is about having a goal and accomplishing it in the only way he knows how. Doing anything else would be an injustice to the Thief name.

Yeah, we all have concearns.

Those who are following the Kickstarter revolution, where indie devs raise millions from fans to make sequels to RPG's of the 80's, I wish a re-emerged Looking Glass Studios would do the same for a Thief sequel. But it is just a dream. :(

Yes, Dark Mod is great, the next best thing to the original. Which reminds me, I have to play some of the newer missions!
