Found this map of Riften

I think most of you guys overestimate the size of actualy medieval towns from the real world, and the fact that in a fantasy game like Skyrim you're only going to visit the towns for questgivers, shopping and similar things that don't require much size.

That said, I would love if BGS could one day design an Elder Scrolls game that had some decent amount of adventure to be found within a town, like what you see in Rockstar games or even in Baldur's Gate or Athkathla of the Baldur's Gate series. Huge cities that has urban quests, sewer systems, a plethora of political conspiracies and whatnot, etc.

Imagine having a major city where 1 district is the peaceful center, whereas the rest of the city is chock-full of bandits and crime and allows for some serious medieval-type urban warfare. Imagine city ruins containing undead and other monsters.

I imagined The City from Thief series, while reading this. MUST NOT THINK ABOUT THIEF 4.

http://www.primagames.com/media/images/guides/hero/skyrim_maps_jpg_677x337_crop_upscale_q85.jpg It's from a preview of an online map you can purchase. I'm trying to withold judgement here, but I can't help but feel dissapointed. I know Riften is one of the smaller "big" cities, and there's probably more content in the sewers, and it is well designed, but this looks REALLY small. I count 15 buildings (Average OB city had about 24), which is nothing, also looking at it with the scale of the map in mind (based off that map from the behind-the-scenes vid in Feb that showed some of the city outlines) it doesn't bode well for the size of the province map either. I hope the other cities are just as dense as this one. I'll probably try and do some city expansions with mods. Thoughts?

Yeah, my thought is that you're too quick to be disappointed. That's only about a third of Skyrim in the background.

True, but walkway widths can be deceiving. In terms of land area would you say it's smaller than Bruma?

Size isn't equal to Bigness (How big we fell that it's), Quality, Beauty or Fun. So I don't know why you worry so much about it.

Anyway, I would say that it's a size between Skingrad and Cheydinhal, but with two layers.
