learning enchanztments by destroying items broken?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 8:04 am

so, ive learned an enchantment like "destruction needs 8% less mana". enchanting something with it will give exactly that effect when using a grand soul gem. but i cant go higher, 8% is max. so i thought if i find a robe with "destruction needs 10% less mana", i could break it for that effect but no, it says "enchantment already known". am i screwed for learning weak enchantments early?

No, your enchanting level and the perks you have in enchanting define how strong the enchanment is (along with the soul gem ofc)

Enchanting is pretty complex. It's almost totally based on how high you take it in skill through use, and really goes up with perks (but when you take it higher, you have to use it and get Soul Gems or die). It's like Witchcraft to be honest (for real life parallels during the materials and magic times).

If you aren't afraid of magicka that doesn't use magicka, feel free to toss some points in! Armors and weapons can be enchanted at will without any repercussions (due to magic being considered weak in the Nordic lands of Skyrim).

I don't personally have much experience with previous Elder Scrolls games, but from what I understand magick has less impact in the realm of Skyrim, where the magnitude of Dragons and Shouts reign supreme.

well the level alone doesnt change anything. im pretty sure if the object i destroyed would have had a stronger enchantment of teh same kind, id be able to make stronger enchantments now, no matter what level anything is.

The item level of the piece you are trying to enchant also matters a lot.

You could have 100% enchanting, full percs, etc, and you will still not be able to put, for example, as much +health on a dwarven helmet as you would on a Deadric one. The deadric armor is capable of holding more spell charge.

So, it's Ench level + soul gem level + item level that give you the percents on your gear, it has nothing to do with the strength of the enchantment when DE'd.

how do double enchants work though?
like I have a robe with a +regen bonus and a -cost bonus
if I destroy it will it become a single effect or 2 seperate ones?
and does the relation between the numbers make any difference?
will breaking a robe of +50 regen -17 cost give me a different effect than one with+75 regen -12 cost?

The item you destroyed only teaches you the effect, it does not lock you into a specific percent improvement. That percent will go up as your skill raises and based on the size of the soul you use to enchant.

there is no difference if i enchant fur or vulcanic glass, "destriction needs 5% less mana" stays like that

no it doesnt. i havent put perk points into enchantment but i raised the skill for like 30 pts (20 to 50) and it didnt change anything. if i destroyed a "destriction needs 5% less mana" robe, grand soul will give me that effect and everything else is lower.

also i drank enchanting bonus potions but that didnt change anything. (same goes for smithing potions)

It's one enchantment, for example, "Fortify Alteration & Magicka Regen." There's also "Fortify Alteration" and "Fortify Magicka Regen" enchantments, so that's three enchantments total. You'll need to find and disenchant three items with the relevant effects in order to learn the three enchantments.

The single effect versions provide a better individual bonus than the two bonuses provided by the dual effect version.
