Skyrim is Hard Crashing my Computer every 10 minutes.

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 2:37 am

So I started to hard crash. At first I thought woot looks like its just a certain bug as it happen right when the character creation screen came up. Then it happen again after I rebooted after a few minutes in the character creation and so I thought okay maybe fraps is causing it to hard crash the PC? Third time no fraps even uninstalled it for fun HARD CRASH lol.

So far 3 hard crashes I can't get far into the game after about a couple minutes it happens and it seems to happen always during character creation part during it maybe some kind memory leak or something bad not sure.

Here is my computer info:

Mainboard : Asus SABERTOOTH P67
Chipset : Intel Sandy Bridge
Processor : Intel Core i7 2600K @ 3400MHz
Physical Memory : 16384MB (4 x 4096 DDR3-SDRAM )
Video Card : AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series x2
Hard Disk : OCZ-VERTEX3 MI ATA Device (120GB)
Hard Disk : Western Digital WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0 ATA Device (1000GB)
Hard Disk : Western Digital WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0 ATA Device (1000GB)
Hard Disk : Western Digital WD20EARS-00MVWB0 ATA Device (2000GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH22NS50
Monitor Type : S242HL - 24 inches x3
Network Card : Intel Cougar Point Ethernet Controller
Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate Professional Media Center 6.01.7600 (64-bit)
DirectX : Version 11.00
Windows Performance Index : 5.9 on 7.9

More Information:
I ran Prime95 for 20+ Minutes on Blend mode and the pc of course did not crash and was stable as expected. 20 minutes should be enough since I know Skyrim uses 1/10 resources and lasts like 5 minutes lol...

Other Games that work just fine (Meaning NEVER CRASH ESPECIALLY A HARDCRASH):
- World of Warcraft Maxed Hours and Hours
- Rift Maxed out hours and hours sometimes I forget and leave it on overnight.
- Minecraft with a 128x128 Texture Pack DAYS IDLING on my PC.
- BF3 Hours and Hours Ultra Everything.

As you can see my PC is just fine and everything is running on the SSD like the games I stated including Skyrim...

Yeah, I'm also getting hard crashes that force a computer reboot. Also have had CTD's. This is occuring in the first part of the game in the "training" mission. Everytime I enter the room where you are supposed to grab potions the game will either CTD or hardboot my machine when walking up to one of the tables. Game literally just came out so I understand there will be issues but a hardboot of my machine? I thought this was a Bethesda game, not EA. Anyways, here are my specs so maybe this issue can be narrowed down.

Gigabyte 790XTA-UD4 Motherboard
AMD 965 BE PhenomII Processor
8Gb RAM
2x ATI 5770's in CrossfireX
Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit
1000W power supply

I have everything on high with all range sliders maxed and the game runs great even on my older vid cards, so kudos for that. Now if the game would only run stable.

Edit: It is possible this is an ATI driver issue, the CTD I got was accompanied by a message stating that my graphics driver stopped responding and had recovered. Given the track record of graphics drivers and new game releases I would not be surprised if this issue is due to needing a driver update from the vid card manufacturers.

This might be crazy but I think I solved the crashing or lucky.

OCZ-VERTEX3 is my main 120gig drive. It was at 1.04 From the looks of it or was it 1.02 damn anyways I update to 1.15 through linux boot and I have not crashed since was able fraps a solid half an hour +

The only thing else I can think of is GPU Over heating. Though my GPU is rated for what up to 95C? I think I was 78-80C 99% of the time.

Have you tried disabling crossfire? It isn't supported yet, so having your second card in action might be causing memory leaks.

Crossfire is not enabled.

Also it crashed again. :( So no nothing was fixed and this a hardlock btw causes a forced reboot.

That's not cool. Is it a BSOD?

For what it is worth I had no issues after playing for a tad over 4 hours.
running game at ultra mode.
in full screen.

It has to be some hardware / driver glitch for sure.

System specs in my sig.
Moderate overclock on CPU, nothing on the GPU.
No SSD drives. Game is on a raid array though.

Not using the very latest nvidia drivers though, i need to update that sig.
Mine are older ones that date back a good six months ago.

I'm the same pretty much. I'm running a Dimension 9800 from 2006, Radeon HD sapphire 1GB graphics card, 3 gb ram, and a crap 2.6 dual core (the first dual core series ever made.) I can max out every setting in this game, including fade distances. With very minimal FPS issues. I haven't had a single bug or issue (except one, being unable to unequipt a right handed spell, a minor problem.) It has to be on your guys ends. Something you have on your PC is breaking it. Do a reformat, install only drivers and hardware software and then try. My audio is perfect also and I run it through my G510 Keyboard. Bethesda over all optimized this game very well, sadly most of you are idiots, this is a brand new game engine, it had no demo or beta of any sort, many, many, many games have issues like this when they have a brand new product. Open world games like this are very difficult to find bugs is because everyone's game is different. If you so stressed out wait sometime for them to fix it. As i said I haven't had any issues really with an extremely old, with weak hardware PC.

I don't know if it's a BSOD or not I mean it's just a total locking of my PC. It has to be forced rebooted.

Blue screen usually means a memory leak.

What version of catalyst are you using?

First off, try restoring to factory defaults in the catalyst control center. If that doesn't help, rolling the drivers back to 11.9 has worked for some people (myself included). Beyond that I cant suggest anything. There is a new Catalyst application profile due out, so hopefully that'll fix things for us radeon users.

There's a rollback button if you look at the drivers for your card in device manager. Dead easy. Just keep rollin' back until catalyst shows 11.9.

Thanks I will update this with results. Will also create new game since it seems to be the most impact so far.

Have you overclocked you CPU or gpu? 20 mins prime will not tell you if your CPU is stable. 24+ is what you should run if oc. I have failed prime95 close to 20 hrs in.

If you have oc set everything to stock and see if it still crashes. The fact your not getting a bsod is worrisome. Something is either overheating or failing, Your pc doesn't even have the time to properly tell you what's up with a bsod. Does the screen go black? Or just freeze with whatsoever on the screen staying there? Can you ctrl alt dlt out of it? Also could be a faulty psu.

Sorry to hear that Kane. I hope you get it sorted. If you're an Elder Scrolls fan, then Skyrim's a must (about 10 hours in and loving it). I'm sure the technical glitches will get ironed out, there are always risks buying at launch I suppose.

Hi Kane :P

Same issue here, it's definitely an ATI thing, the game works fine on my Nvidia setup but craps out on my ATI one.
