Have you tried using the Whirlwind Sprint shout instead? Despite its description and animation of running, it's actually more of a short-range teleport - you can "sprint" across fairly large gaps (longer than any running long jump might be) without falling in. (The shout is gained pretty early in the main quest, so you're guaranteed to get it quite easily if you choose to do so.)
I did quite like the concept of that paticular shout, and used it a few times with the character I played who got so far as to obtain it, but mostly I simply always forget about the shouts whilst playing the game. They're an interesting twist on the formula, and certainly represent some unique effects, but to me are only supplementary gimmicks rather than reliable actions. To be fair, I am largely spoiled from playing Fallout: New Vegas with the delightful Project Nevada overhaul mod, which, among many other things, implemented a sprinting system almost exactly like what we now have in Skyrim, only one could both succesfully jump whilst sprinting
and retain their momentum to cross larger distances.
