I need some computer help (ad blocking)

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 6:26 am

Hi guys, I seem to have run in to an issue with my computer and I don't know what to do. I have a 2010 macbook, in the last few days I have this issue where whenever I click on a link it appears twice, I can't read spoiler tages on this site and when I quote someone here, whatever I quote appears twice.

I also have these ads popping up everywhere, so I'll read a post and one word will be blue and highlighted and when I go over it, I'm told I've won an Ipad or something of that ilk.

I've tried deleting all my cookies and site plug in data, plus downloads, browsing history etc but still no luck.

It's really annoying, does anyone have any ideas? :)

It sounds like you have some malware on your computer, you will probably need to run an anti malware utility to identify and fix the problem,A good antivirus should do it.

In a worst case scenario ,format your harddrive and reinstall your operating system

I though Macs couldn't get viruses? I just read up about it and a guy had the same issue, it was a thing called "Codec-m" I just uninstalled it and it seems to have got rid of it, so far...

Should I still install and anti virus? I think I must have got it from a plug in I installed to watch "The Walking Dead" online.

I seem to have got rid of the ads, but I still can't edit my posts, nor read spoiler tags and it's still quoting people twice. How strange...

What browser are you using?
Have you installed any plugins for it recently? If so try uninstalling them.

No Mac users just think they can't get viruses, but you definitely have some form of malware on your pc. Get some decent malware removal tool (MBAM is great for this, but I don't know if it works on Macs) and scan your computer in safe mode. The only way to be completely sure though is to format and reinstall your OS, but that is only necessary for the very worst cases.

Oh wow, not even heard about Codec-m malware for Mac. I usually like following the latest malware trends on Mac OS X too, as I like telling Macheads how wrong they are when they say they can't get viruses. Any security expert worth their weight in beans will tell you that OS X is less secure than Windows from a technical standpoint, just has less in the wild malware (and that is changing quite fast judging from the past year).

Anyway, there are two good choices for Mac OS X free antivirus:

http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx

http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-mac

I'd probably go with Sophos at this point. It's gotten solid reviews. Once avast! leaves beta, though, I would consider switching if the reviews hold up for it.
