The only thing I think might "magically" work better is the fact that AMD can't seem to get proper OpenGL support in their drivers. I know some Nvidia people are still suffering, but for the most part I think the game is at least playable on most of those configurations.

If it is a DirectX port, it will most likely be DX9 anyway, although I have to say, I've never been that impressed with anything dx10 / dx11 has supposedly added. Seems to be mostly snake oil anyway.

I don't see why it would be that big a deal, they can probably merge the XBox renderer mostly into the PC version, as it should be a DirectX render path. Maybe they have some more raw access in there that will need ported to suffer through the usual slow API.

Blizzard Entertainment actually has had the right idea about this for a while, they have been making games with dual render engines on PC, which is usually as simple as adding "-opengl" to the command line. This has given them easy portability to the Mac and usually Linux / Wine compatability as well. Rage probably could have had a "-directx" toggle at launch without much difficulty. Also has the benefit of exploring the possible benefits and optimization on both sides, although by now I think DX9 probably looks fairly symmetrical to OpenGL.

Converting a 60fps openGL game to Dx is like putting a VW engine in a race car. The whole point of openGL is that its faster and the latest update to openGL released this year includes all the features of Dx 11.
