After each restart of the game I have to activate the custom setting manually by accessing the menu and moving the option cursor back or forth.

EDIT: Reducing the amount of gamma deepens the shadows, and makes the game more atmospheric for me. That is how I've noticed, that using the option won't give me result after the next start.
