Drivers

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 5:42 am

I'm planning on upgrading my Midi driver to BassMidi, but I do not know much about drivers so there are a few things that I don't know about. Sorry if they are obvious, I've never tried anything like this before and I do not want to break my new Laptop.
Which driver is the default one for midis on windows 7?
Is it possible to return to that driver if I do not like BassMidi or if it does not work? If you can, how?
Is it worth upgrading to BassMidi? I do use midis a lot for Zelda Classic.

Thanks for any help!

Windows 7 doesn't let you select the midi driver like in WinXP, but you can use the Bassmidi config to change the driver. The default is the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.

Is it possible to return to that driver if I do not like BassMidi or if it does not work? If you can, how?
Yeah, just set it back to that and uninstall Bassmidi.

Bassmidi is great if you find a good soundfont. I recommend the older version 1.06 because the newer ones lag a bit before starting playback.

Ok, I'll try to get BassMidi 1.06.
Where would it be now though? I had a look on the official website, but they only have version 3.0.

Also, would it need any extra soundfonts to work or does it work without anything extra?

Thanks for the help!

Edit: I forgot to ask, does it come with it's own installer or program to help install it? Thanks Again!

Yeah, I noticed that they took it off recently for whatever reason. If you can't find it anywhere, I uploaded it http://www.mediafire.com/?ddh7z3lt4a5uz8x for you.

You need a soundfont for it to work. That what the driver is, a method for using better soundfonts than the default Microsoft one.

I recommend the SGM-V2.01 soundfont file. It's about 250MB and should be easy enough to find.

Oh and here an example of the same midi on both drivers if you're interested in the difference:

Ok, I've downloaded the installer and am looking up the soundfont you recommended. Can any soundfont be used or do they need to be certain soundfonts?

Thanks for the installer and the help!

You could use any soundfont you want, they'll all sound different so it's a matter of opinion which is the best.

I've found two that sound good (the one you recommended and the HG/SS soundfont), so I'm going to try installing them now.
Thanks! :thanks:

... ok, I've hit a problem. I don't know how to install or use the soundfonts with BassMidi. I've tried adding the soundfont to the list on the SountFonts page of the Driver Configuration and pressing apply, but there is no change to the Midis. I have also tried changing the Default Midi Synth to the BASSMIDI Driver when selecting a soundfont, but no music will play at all after I do that. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the help.

Do you have a dedicated soundcard? I had a similar problem where the music wouldn't play, it turns out the problem was I had my soundcard set in gaming mode.

I don't know what soundcard I have or if it is dedicated or not. This is the first laptop I've ever had, meaning I haven't any idea on how to do anything other than play games on it.
How would you be able to tell if it is dedicated and how would you be able to change it's mode?
Thanks again for the help.

Just to make sure, you pressed apply on both tabs so it looks something like http://i.imgur.com/0JjIE.jpg, correct?

I don't know about that audio card, see if you can find a sound configuration utility installed for your card and try changing some settings. I'm pretty sure that's where the problem is.

I found a program that looks like this:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/163/audioprogrampic.png/
Is this it?

I also noticed that if I close the Driver Configuration window and re-open it, the soundfont file disappears, even if I just pressed apply. Is that supposed to happen?

That's most likely the problem. Try uninstalling the driver and reinstall it as admin. (right click>run as admin) Do the same for the configuration program afterwards.

I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it as administrator. Now, it is saying that it cannot write the file into system32. I've only heard bad things about that system. Have I done something wrong?
