Infuriating HDD access problem

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 1:07 pm

Hi,

Hoping someone wouldn't mind helping me out, as I can't find ANY reference to this particular issue, anywhere, on any forums. I can't be the only one suffering from it?

Every time I turn around, in most areas, the game accessess the HDD presumably to load the textures and the game slows down. This may not be a problem, except for the fact that vsync is mandatory to make the thing playable, and therefore every time I look around the game drops to 30fps for a second or so. Really spoils the enjoyment of the game for me.

I've tried all the fixes that have been suggested since the game came out (I couldn't even get it to run pre-patch, it just crashed every time I load a save, and on the occasional time that it would run, I usually got about 10fps). I have created, and linked to, a cache folder. I've played around with the graphics options, even taking out the 8k textures doesn't fix it. I have noticed that the problem is signfiicantly worse with GPU transcoding disabled.

I have a fairly high end rig aswell. i5 2500k, 8GB RAM, Geforce 560Ti (1GB), etc. When it isn't loading the textures up, it runs smooth as anything. But this is really ruining an otherwise fun game for me.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The only HDD related stuff I could think of would be to turn off file indexing.

Yeah, or enabling write caching.

Write caching already enabled by the looks of it. :/

I did initially wonder if I simply didn't have enough video RAM so it had to constantly access the hard drive (although that would be particularly [censored], considering >1GB cards are quite rare), but I get exactly the same problem with the 4k textures.
