its because the servers are busy that the game will not install. just wait so you can install from disk. i know its stupid that the server being busy would affect a disk install, but i had the same problem with another game bought that was steam.

i know you won`t get your money back tho mate.

everyone is having problems with this game your not alone :)

The actual solution to this is the number one sticky in the forum.

The #1 solution needs more "without allowing STEAM to STEAMroll your PC and create their advertisemant framework, you can't initiate the mandatory patch and get even a start option to run the install from your disc".

I dont use or have the internet at all on my gaming desktop, for one very good reason, the kids use it and the last thing I want is one of them trawling the net for stuff. This thing had better be able to load up from the disc alone or its not fit for purpose and that means money back.

It's inexcusable to have ANY activation issues when someone is trying to install from a disc. Bethesda and Valve owe their customers an apology. Hopefully when mine comes in the mail this doesn't happen.

The game requires a one time Internet activation, so you won't be able to launch the game.

then you are out of luck....

Skyrim MUST run with STEAM activated.

when you install the CD you have to install Steam with it and create a steam account to register your game. The CD has the game files but you can only run them from the steam client.

You can play the game in offline mode. But you need to authenticate it online with steam first.

This is why you always buy with a "junk" credit card and do a chargeback if the game doesn't perform.

When it arrives tomorrow I will try to load it up from the disc. I will go through the usual motions of error snagging and trying to get it to work, at that point it will be time for a refund because nowhere does it say on Amazon that I need an internet connection to install or run the game. I use my laptop for the internet as I can monitor it and control when it gets used and by whom. Having a 7 year old and a 10 year old farting about on a computer, playing Dogz and the like is fine, but not mucking around on the internet. They should have made it abundantly clear that this game requires the internet to run it. Nor do I want STEAM loading up its pointless, space wasting rubbish on my computer.

I am absolutely furious!!! a part of me apportions some blame to the pirate scum that have fed this kind of paranoia.

No offense to you, but maybe you should investigate a product before making a purchase. Just a tip.

I don't suggest this if you have other games on your account. They will lock your account down and you lose access to all your games not just the one you chargeback.

It has been well known for months that Skyrim would require Steam, and thus require at least a one time Internet activation. If you don't have the Internet on that computer, it won't work. You trying to go through error snagging and trying to get it to work will be pointless. It's going to tell you it needs an Internet connection the first time it launches. Plus you have to have a Steam account, and to have one of those on your gaming computer you need an Internet connection to log into the account the first time. So in your case, you won't be able to get the game to run.

Personally i find steam to be quite convenient, but the information about DRM on games has a tendency to be really poor. (I havn't seen the skyrim box in stores so i don't know what it looked like, but i'm guessing it was some fine print on the back somewhere at best)

any DRM infested game should be required to dedicate 75% of the front area of the box to a clear warning label with information about the restrictions that apply, that would solve the problem. (Returning a PC game to a store after you've opened the box can be very difficult so its not unreasonable at all to require proper information before a purchase, (And the customer really shouldn't have to research the product before hand, all relevant information should be on the packaging))

It still uses Steam in activation and to verify the files. The disc is used, I can guarantee that. You should noticed the "download" rate is in the 3-5MB/s range. Of course you could have Internet that fast...

This happens every damn time they release a Steamworks based game. The disc is used, but the Installation procedure looks similar from the download variant.

Steam is evil. My favourite is no option to install the game other than as a "steam app". Is it really too much to ask that people who buy the game legally actually own the game, and not the other way around? I want to install it in D:\Games\Skyrim, not C:\Wherever\Steam\YouGotFdInTheA\BethesdaPartyOfTheSovietUnion\TehElderScrollsVSkyRimJob\F**kYou

I get the GTAIV vibes all over again, that is to say steaming (yeah, pun) with hate before even starting the game, because I just want to buy, install and play, not jerk around forever with third party parasites.

Well, LEGALLY, you never owned any game in your life, or any software other than the code you wrote yourself. The thing is Steam offers an unprecedented degree of enforcability of this notion.

And to the OP, out of sheer curiosity, how did you go about installing the game? I'm guessing most people install Steam, activate the game and hit "install" in the Library tab (because selecting that option normally downloads the game, it's not a bug!) instead of running setup from disk. I'm REALLY curious, because I own a fair number of steamworks games and not ONCE did I experience this issue.

Is this going to be a modding issue too? Vista is poor at allowing mods to work, the CS would not save into anything in the program file directory. What on earth possessed a company as reputable and excellent as Bethesda to do this? Its just bizarre!
