Changing the looks of armor and weapons

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 4:15 pm

Hey guys, not sure if I'm supposed to post this here, but it seemed right

Is there any way to change the looks of your armor? (and weapons). I just got the Deadric Armor and 1h Sword from Blacksmithing and, it looks absolutely horrible, I mean seriously.. It looks absolutely horrible, is there any way to, for example, change the look of the entire Deadric armor set into, say, Iron or Steel? And the 1h sword into the look of 1h iron sword?

Thanks in advance

edit:
I'm no experienced modder or whatever myself, but I can imagine this not being something too hard, there are after all item IDs for every item in the game, right?

This can be done but maybe not they way you are thinking.

First we need the Creation Kit and then you can achieve this.

Decide which armor you like the look of be it Steel, Iron, Hide... whatever type. Using the CK you can go in and copy the item, rename it something new and then adjust the stats to be equal to Deadric.

You'd then have to drop it in the world or use the in-game console to add the item to you inventory. You now have armor equal to Daedric but does not look like Daedric. I plan to do this for Steel armor, as I think it is friggin' gorgeous and so appropriate for Skyrim. (I'm playing as a Nord!)

I know I did not give detailed instructions but there are places to find modding advice, like Skyrim Nexus. And in truth it is a great way to get in to modding. I am an amateur, at best, myself. And I started learning by doing exactly what I proposed above.

Alright thanks, I'll check out Skyrim Nexus then, btw, isn't the Creation Kit released yet or what?

You don't really need the creation kit.
  • You need to extract the files from the meshes.bsa. I recommend "FO3Archive"
  • Locate the mesh used for the weapon you are trying to replace (we will call this one mesh mesh a ) and the mesh for the weapon you want to replace it with ( we will call this one mesh b ).
  • Copy mesh b into the directory where you found mesh a. delete mesh a.
  • Rename mesh b to the name that mesh a was.
  • To revert, just delete mesh b and it will go back to using the files in the bsa.
Also. You do not need to extract any meshes form the bsa besides mesh b. You just have to make sure that mesh b's name and directory match mesh a's exactly.

Almost sounds like you are looking for the equivalent of an "appearance" inventory separate from your actual gear, like what some other games have done. So that you can have whatever appearance you want regardless of what you are actually wearing. I know EverQuest 2 and Age of Conan do this, not sure what others.

How do I do this if I'm playing Skyrim from Steam? I can't seem to find any local files, except for a shortcut on the desktop that leads to opening Steam and starting Skyrim from there.

Everyone is playing Skyrim from steam. Your local files are located in your "Steam/steamapps/common/Skyrim" folder.

It sounds like you want to learn modding. :)

You could take this as an opportunity to learn to mod and to retexture. You could, for example, make an iron sword and recolor it to match daedric items.

I personally think the Ebony weapons should use the models of the iron weapon, but be colored black & gold. I may do this at some point.

Alright, I found the local files. I really expected more from myself lol, usually I'm not this crap at matters like these. Thanks alot, and btw yeah, learning how to mod would be great I suppose, although I don't really expect I'll be creating masterpieces.

Thanks again.

Would that work to create new armors, or just modify what is already there?

Right now, without the creation kit we cannot create new items, but we can modify their appearance to a degree and switch which item uses which model. It wouldn't be too difficult to make a black & red iron longsword to replace the daedric one.
