Horribly Jagged and Blocky Shadows

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 7:58 am

Besides the lag / framerate issues, the horribly jagged and blocky shadows in the PS3 version of Skyrim are something I would love to be fixed. I know other PS3 games suffer from this issue as well, but I've never seen it so bad or have been so completely taken out of an experience as I have here. When I see them I just stop and stare. The shadows are an issue throughout but are much, much worse in indoor areas. They just look so pixelated and awful that I can't imagine anyone developing this game finding it at all acceptable. I wouldn't mind if they just blurred the hell out of them. Literally anything would be an improvement.

I'd love to tell you that worked, but it didn't. The pixel by pixel shadows are still very much present. Am I the only one with this Issue?

I'm lv 29, 46:37 hrs in, with a save file size of 8403 KB, and as far as I know the shadows have been as horrible as they are now since the very beginning.

Obviously lag / framerate issues should be addressed first (something that's slowly getting worse for me).

Not really even IGN had made a note on the Shadows. Your not the only one that notices it. I wouldn't say that they are blocky, they're flickering at no end. I am with you on this too man the shadows needs to be patched as well. However I would want the frame rate to be fixed first. Last thing, I ain't no game developer but would it make sense to use the land scape to cast the shadows? Like for example, instead of having a artificial light in the engine casting the shadows off of objects. You would just add the shadow around the object in development cycle and time it's hue to the specific time of the day. I personally would have gone with that development instead of using the engine itself to cast the shadows. Does that make sense?

Yeah I have dodgy shadows as well. To be honest though I'd be happy if they just fixed the aweful lagging.

I'm not sure how they should have done it. I know this wasn't an issue in Oblivion or Fallout. Perhaps they should have done what they did there? My first thought is to simply blur the the shadows (especially the edges) so that they don't look like teeth end of a saw.

Yeah, lag should be first, along with any other game-breaking bugs. These ridiculous shadows should also be a major point of concern as well.

Yea the dynamic shadows are downright awful. I'd rather just have no shadows for people and keep the regular "baked" shadows for static objects.
