Carmack's Twitter post about bicubic-upsample+detail texture

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 11:00 pm

Carmack posted via Twitter on October 14th: "We have a bicubic-upsample+detail texture option for the next PC patch that will help alleviate the blurry textures in Rage."

Just had a look what bicubic-upsample is and I think it might actually look nice but I'm not sure. What do you think?

Softer textures with some grain?

To be frankly I don't think Bethesda/id Software is going to invest in re-texturing Rage similar to what EA/Crytek has done with the Crysis 2 hi-res pack but you never know... if Rage sells well? ... maybe?

As always, the problem with retexturing Rage is that you're looking at about 150 GB in order for it to be worthwhile. That's part of the tradeoff here. We can have a 100% uniquely textured world with no tiling, no repeating, but in return we have to accept lower resolution, compression and larger file sizes.

Detail textures should be interesting for Rage. It should be possible to pack 4 detail patterns into a single texture, with each vertex of the world having a 4-float detail value (you could use 4 bytes), and then it becomes a simple texture lookup followed by a dotproduct to get a very very good effect. I wonder if ID have contemplated something like that? (Techie digression).

They're not generating a 150 GB (or so) texture patch, but are using techniques to minimize how blurry some parts of it look.

I would prefer if they focused on getting the game to run properly first.

Totally agree... Bethesda and id Software have shown a great response to the problems and complaints people have.

Agreed. Todd Thollenshead himself helped me get the game running prop. thats insanely cool of him imho.. hes the pres of id, he coulda just ignored me via twitter.
unfortunately, nothin we tried got it to work. had to wait on the 11.10 prev 3 driver to come out. But still, he gave me alot of his time over several days that he did not have to give.
