Path for Rage install.

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 2:34 pm

Why can't the install path be picked on install of Rage? or any stream game at that matter?

Actually I wish it gave a option where to install.
I have a 120gb SSD hard drive as my C: drive.
I don't want to fill it up, so it would be nice if I had the option to pick where to install.
I have a second hard drive 500gb that I'd rather all these stream games be on.

Am I missing something in the install of Rage/stream games?

All the games are stored where you installed steam.

All the games are stored where you installed steam.
So I'll have to uninstall stream & start from scratch to get all my stream games onto another hard drive?
Hopefully if that's what I have to do I can some how transfer my saved games by overwriting with the old
stuff/saved games to the new location. I've done it in the past, but not sure if it will work with this.

If you want to move the entire Steam folder/games to the other hard drive you can actually do just that. Just move the whole Steam folder over to the hard drive, create a new shortcut, drag it to your desktop and run Steam from theret. It'll repair everything for you and be ready to go!!

Of course as always, make a backup just to be safe ;)

Another question if I uninstall stream will games be uninstalled?
If so I'll need to make a backup before hand.

I had thought about that, but didn't know how it might work out.
Thanks for the info & link! I'll have a look.

Worked great. I just moved everything, where it said to delete some files. Was no need to.
It did for some reason think it was installed to a new computer, so a e-mail was sent.
Other than having to verify with a code sent e-mail that I'm who I say I am. lol
Its working. Thanks.

Update: game did feel smoother when installed to the SSD hard drive.
Feels a little more slug-est now than it did before the move.
Guess these SSD do make a difference in game play.

You can also use an NTFS Junction Point/Symbolic Link is you are on Vista or 7:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_junction_point (for general information)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_symbolic_link (for how to actually do it)

I'm on Windows 7 and Steam is installed into my "C:\Program Files (x86)" folder, BUT, the "steamapps" folder within that is actually on my E drive courtesy of a junction point. The way junction points work means that this is completely transparent to the application. As far as Steam is concerned: it thinks 100% that the game data is on the C drive.

Thanks I'll have a look into this at a later date. Thanks!

You're welcome! Here's the general procedure I followed: Quit Steam. Make the symbolic link, move all the files to the new location. Start Steam. You'll know if you did it right because "nothing changed." ;)

Edit: made a small logic error: Quit Steam, move the files/folders, make the symbolic link, start Steam.

Whoa. Headkase, you are awesome! Thanks for this amazing tip! i was hoping there was a way to fool the OS or Steam, because my 60 gig SSD is full now with RAGE , GTA IV and crazy modded Fallout 3, and i had to lose New Vegas to fit RAGE. i want to keep the SSD for sandbox type games that have a HUGE world to load and maybe re-install RAGE on one of my HDD once i finish my initial play through. Not too sure about Skyrim... i really need to get a bigger SSD. 2 years ago when i built this system, a 30 GB and a 60 GB OCZ Vertex were more than 2 weeks salary =P

But yeah, thanks again! Its great to learn, because knowledge is power!

Peace and Love!

That's one of my only gripes with Steam, despite gladly using it.
It also annoys me though, how much of a cpu hog it can be - sometimes it peaks as high as 26% cpu usage, though usually oscillates between 2% and 13%.

Remember, you can create symbolic links anywhere, in a folder, inside of that, etc. The "steamapps" folder contains all of Steam's game files. If you just wanted one game, say "rage" folder, to be elsewhere then just do that one!

Yeah, symbolic links are the bees knees! i just moved the mp folder, because i'm offline and will probably never get to use it, and got 6.77 gigs back on my SSD! Thanks again for enlightening me to this sweet technique! Here is a little http://www.imgplace.com/viewimg404/2898/37link01.png
