version 3 driver - major windows issue when uninstall

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:15 pm

I installed the 11.10 v3 drivers and the installer didn't work properly or something so I went to uninstall and do a clean install. Upon rebooting after uninstall Windows would no longer power or recognize my USB devices which means you can't fix anything if you don't have a PS/2 port. It did this even in safe mode. (The keyboard and mouse worked in the recovery partition and BIOS.)

so just a warning

MAKE A RECOVERY POINT BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE VERSION 3 DRIVERS.

I didn't have one because I had turned that function off, and I was forced to reformat my computer. I DID replicate this issue again after reformatting with a different download of the drivers (with a recovery point to fall back to). Maybe it's just my hardware, but take this as a warning.

Did you run driver sweeper? Sometimes driver sweeper removes AMD drivers from the MOTHER BOARD if you have an AMD board. I had to learn this the hard way. Messed up all kinds of things on my PC

I've had this problem before with AMD's own Catalyst Uninstaller, which gives you a warning message saying that USB and other devices may no longer work if you continue. I used to select the "Custom" option instead of "Express" uninstall which allowed me to specify which driver components to uninstall. Since the advent of WIndows 7 I've no longer needed to do that as Win 7 seems to have its own version of AMD drivers in its library that load up when you next reboot.

The biggest problem I have when using Driver Sweeper is that I frequently get the "INF Error, Video Driver Not Found" when trying to install new Cats so I no longer use it and just stick to AMD's own remover.

Another poster said something about the drivers for the mobo being taken off as well as the catalyst drivers i installed and I suspect this is the issue. The first time i did the uninstall i used driver sweeper and it nuked it, so i figured it was that; when i did it the second time it was just using the catalyst "express remove all ATI drivers" or something. Both resulted in the lack of drivers for my motherboard. So I tested with other versions of the drivers.

But it's only the preview 3 drivers that have done this to me; I tested it with 11.8, 11.9, 11.10, v2 and v3.

Anyhow. I was just throwing it out there so some one else has a chance to see it and not make my mistake. I was lucky that I had a live CD hanging around and was able to get the stuff i didn't have backed up off of the HDD.

That doesn't even make sense. Nothing installs drivers to the Mother Board.

Do you mean it deletes the Chipset drivers? Not really an issue for Intel users.

How is Intel relevant to this thread?

It's relevant in that you can use an AMD graphics card on an..... Intel motherboard! (imagine that)

I was confused by the wording of his post, but then I realised he meant that using driver cleaner might also delete AMD drivers for your motherboard if you happen to have an AMD processor.

So no, I wasn't trolling.
