Okay...so reduced the sound playback quality in control panel from 48K to 44.1K as per that first post's advice on the off chance it'd do something and voila, it won't crash at that point anymore. On one hand thanks for identifying such a problem and providing a work-around...but on the other: Games shouldn't dictate needs like that, you should have fixed this before release.
Edit: Or not, went back in and the game locked up again going through that sequence. I killed the process and tried again, this time walking only far enough to get the NPC walking across the bridge, then waited for him to cross before I went across as I did that time I worked...and it works. That seems to be the crash condition, getting across the bridge first.
