Making the game playable again: quick lag fix

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 6:36 pm

Ok, I posted in a thread a few days ago that doing a rebuild database worked for me. I have been playing skyrim plenty since then, so I haven't been back to the forum much. I see most people are still suffering from the same lag issue that I was, so I thought I'd re post the fix.

Search youtube for ps3 rebuild database. It's easy to do. I timed it from quitting skyrim, doing a rebuild database and back to playing skyrim was four minutes. Can you be bothered to try it, if it might make your game work again?

It doesn't delete anything vital. it really did help too. I had a save game of eight mb, forty hours of play time. My save is now nine mb, fifty one hours of play. I noticed it playing a bit laggy again, not like before but enough to rebuild database again. now it works smooth again. If this fix gave you ten hours of smooth play, would you try it?

Now I also turned off all the auto save options. This helped as well. I'm not the original poster of this fix, I'm not trying to take credit for anything. I just love this game and want you all to enjoy it too. until bethesda can actually fix the issue, this has enabled me to enjoy the game again. Good luck guys!

Turning off auto save has worked wonders for me, but my save file isn't very big yet.

op, i was getting descent performance at 50 hours too with a simple ps3 reset(when needed), wait untill you get up to around 70hours playtime and see if restoring the ps3 works

i might give it a try tomorrow though, what exactly does it delete ?, and have you tryed that "rebuild data base" too ?

I meant rebuild database, not system restore. Original post edited to reflect this. Sorry, I'm posting this with my phone, less that ideal for proof reading! Lol

I'm reading that option 4 in safe mode results in loss of playlists and message data. What is the playlist this is talking about?

I turned off auto save, and auto save on rest/wait and travel, same thing but hey, but I kept the Menu save on after an hour, just in case I get carried away and forget to save lol. But my files nearly 7k now, and I can feel the judder effects, I need to restart my PS3 after around 3 hours

I've mentioned the database rebuild option several times in other fopics, to no avail,

I'm at 64 hours with a 10MB save and haven't had an issue, but I rebuild the PS3 database once a month because it speeds up the XMB loading and friends list loading a good bit. I had a bit of lag last night, rebuilt the database, smooth gameplay all day today.

For me, it's playing as smooth or better than it ever did (skyrim, that is), like when you first began playing the game, level one, no save file.

Thanks for posting this! I just tried it and played for an hour with absolutely zero stuttering. I have been playing for 47 hours and have an 8mb save file. I was starting to get really nasty stuttering in magic heavy fights and while riding my horse real fast.

So, I rebuilt my database, cleared an entire dungeon, fought a magic heavy boss, and rode my horse around in the rain through a lot of trees. Did not get a single stutter. Not once.

It did not delete my game saves. It did undo all my custom game folders though and put all my games into a folder called "unknown." Assuming my game keeps running like this, small price to pay.

lol, i was just checking how big the game install was on my ps3, and i noticed and date and time i installed the game. 11/11/2011 at exactly 11:11 .. what are the chances ? haaaha

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/d2662

i was reading something in another forum about why deleting the install and rebuild database can be good, and i want to check something else i read in that thread about the size of the game install.
in that pic mine is 4368mb, if anyone has time can you check the size of your skyrim game install file and see if its the same as mine plz ?

If u upgraded ur PS3 with a bigger than standard HD and it's over 50% filled with demo's and such.
Then indeed doing this Database Rebuild is a welcome fix, like someone above said, i also do it once a month as it helps keeping ur system clean and such.
Also helps in loading XMB items, games and friendslist faster! ;-)
