Subtitles and text too small on HDTV

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 6:35 pm

Howdy, folks.

There have been numerous complaints that the game's text is unreadable on SDTVs. It's a real problem on HDTVs, too -- subtitles seem to be in 6-point font, making it impossible to read them from any distance more than six or seven feet away.

Since I'm hard of hearing, I really need the subtitles to have any idea what's going on. I'd appreciate a font-size option for HDTVs being included in any forthcoming patch. Do any other HDTV owners have a problem with the font size?

Im hard of hearing too so i cant live without the subtitles, i play on a 32" HDTV and have to sit close to it (roughly a metre away -.-) just to be able to read the text clearly. We really do need a font-size option.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has accessibility problems. And, of course, people who CAN hear but want to have subtitles are in the same boat as us.

It really bums me out, too, because Oblivion's subtitles were easily readable and never blended in to the background. This is a pretty big step back in terms of accessibility.

I use a 32' HD screen as well and the text is quite small. I have pretty decent eye-sight though so I can read it from an average distance (probably 10-12 feet) no problem. I am frankly surprised how many display options this game lacks.

Agreed, white coloured text on a game that heavily features snow isnt a good idea lol. Oblivion's text was gold so that stood out well. Considering Fallout had the option to change the colour of text etc im surprised Skyrim didnt have that option.

About SDTVs its common knowledge modern game machines are not designed with them in mind. Sure, Oblivion looked well enough. But newer games just want to be more optimized for HD, and as a consequence, SDTV is going to suffer. Games have been unplayable with an SDTV for years now. HDTVs are not that expensive nowadays. With some searching, you can find a 32 inch for under $250. Not to mention 22" being even cheaper.

Did you not even read the title of the thread? The OP says he has an HDTV already and the text is still too small. Unfortunately, Bethesda probably won't do a damn thing about this.

I have good eyes sight and playing this game made something had gone wrong with my eyes. Nice to see Im not the only one. Have 40" TV and put the subtitles on as to not miss any of the dialog but find it a real strain on the old peepers

I also play on a 32" HD television. Some of the subtitles, books and notes are downright impossible to read. Find a cooking pot and tell me if you can read the description of the very last food you can cook up. It is SO tiny! 0_o

The first person mode 'tunnel vision' isnt helpful either.

My hearing is 100% and I have turtle beach headset... But I still use the subtitles dont know why I just like them...

But yeah I agree they are small. I game on a 22' HDTV but sit only 3 feet from the TV so im okay. But it would svck from more than 6 feet away.

I have a 60" plasma and I sometimes think the fonts could be a little bigger.

Everybody has different types of t.v.s and depending on the amount of settings and what the t.v. allows you to do I could see how the small text could be a big problem. I mean there's a huge difference in the 60 hz t.v. I have upstairs and the 120hz I use for gaming.
Obviously developers use the highest grade equipment available to them and don't do enough testing with older equipment.

Unfortunately, this isn't something they plan on fixing.
