Rage Crashes When I Meet John Goodman (please help)

I Bought Rage a little after it came out and couldn't get it to run on anything close to playable until I downloaded the latest driver (the 10/17 one) yesterday. Now the game looks reasonable and seems like it would be really fun, but as soon as I get to the Gas Station that John Goodman drives you to the game crashes every time I get the prompt to exit the buggy. Now I have played through the 1st three minutes of Rage, only three weeks after I bought it!

I have tried switching the ID and RAGE folders on my hard drive to not be Read Only anymore and I also tried copying my atioglxx.dll into my rage folder, both tips given to me on the Steam forums. These two fixes kept me from crashing as soon as I got into the first buggy with John, letting me make it all the way to the Gas Station before crashing.

Also, since the latest ATI driver install, whenever Rage loads up now, the alignment in my monitor goes off only while the RAGE is running. There is a black space about an inch long between the edge of my monitor on the left and whats on the screen and this only happens when RAGE is running, even on my Desktop when I alt+tab. Does anyone know what is causing this?

My system is a desktop with
Processor: AMD Phenom II x 4 840 Processor 3.20GHz
Installed Memory: 6 GB (3.12 Usable)
AMD Radeon 6800 series, 8.901.2.0 driver version.

I have a 32 bit Win 7 OS on my Desktop, I bought windows off of New Egg and it only came with the 32 bit disc, so I don't know how to switch to 64 bit. How could I do that and would that help me to play Rage?

Lastly, I looked around and saw that adding +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 in the "Set Launch Options" in steam will stop the intro video from playing, but that doesn't work. Am I doing it wrong? The video is beautiful but I've seen it over 20+ times at this point. This is another thing recommended from the 1st page of the PC support thread on RAGE in Steam.

Thanks for any and all help you can give me to play this game.
