Woo Hoo, a Treasure Map!

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:20 pm

I found a treasure map in a bandit's bookshelf today. Fun! Let's find it!

Tracked down the starting point, figured out what it was saying, and climbed the mountain to find a slightly hidden chest in the middle of nowhere.

I open it, and...

One bar of orichalcum, a steel sword, and an amethyst.

All I can figure is that the bandit that I took this from must have already been up here and sold off the treasure already. This must have been the stuff he left behind because he couldn't carry it.

Seriously. Someone could have left this stuff laying on the ground in the city, and people would have just walked by. Who would go through the hassle of carrying a chest up a mountain and drawing a treasure map for such a worthless pile of junk?

well iwthout trying to ruin too much for anyone there is more than one treasure map in skyrim. There are also better items as you go along finding them. Some a hard too.

Also anyone else notice some things in Skyrim feel like they are taken from Red Dead Redemption? (flameshield)

I've noticed this too. There are different variables, but I honestly believe if you're going to allow players to find "treasure maps" and the excitement of searching for them, at least end that excitement on a worthy note. Finding 13 gold, an iron dagger and wolf pelt is not a "treasure." Hell, at least give me 50 Nord mead so I can get drunk.

Seems loot scales as well, which is slightly disappointing.

random loot is random? :(

It's not so much an issue of "random," as what the game defines as "teasure."

I don't know, 13 gold, a dagger, and a wolf pelt would seem like treasure to a poverty stricken farmer.

I found one treasure 'hoard' that was just full of stuff. Had to have been 20 different gems, bunch of gold and coin purses, various potions and items. I think it was a bandit cave after I defeated a chief.

I  RDR.

But yes, brawls and treasure maps definitely remind me of RDR (and I'm OK with that).

This.

I can understand the random treasure for caves and bandit lairs. But a special treasure like this needs to be boosted.

Otherwise, why bother tracking it down, when you can just wait a few days for a random cave to respawn and kill the bandits again.

That's not a bad thing. The treasure maps in RDR were a really nice touch, they work even better in a game like Skyrim.

If only Bethesda had copied RDR's horse physics as well...

RDR? Wish I could've played that on the PC...

Nice to know that one piece of a map I've found so far isn't really worth my time...

Spoiler
There were 2 parts to the map. A picture on top, and a picture on bottom.

The picture on top was a top down view city with WR next to it. Figured it meant White Run. There was a horseshoe below the city picture, and a castle to the top right of it, so I may have recognized it based on that too. It showed a line from one point near the road to another point.

The bottom picture was in the perspective as if you were standing on the ground. A windmill and a fence were in the foreground, and a mountain was in the back. There was a line curving up the mountain with a red X at the end.

The top picture showed me how to get to the windmill. I stood where my view matched the bottom picture's perspective, and imagined where the line to the red X matched the mountain in front of me. I followed that path, and found the chest.

All that for a fistfull of nothing.

So far that's the only thing I've noticed that came from Red Dead, what else have you seen? TES should have copied their horse system too, because riding horses in Skyrim is a joke compared to Red Dead!

Ride Horse
Ooo a flower
Pick flower
Ride Horse
Ooo a root
Pick Root
Mauled by ninja bear

Not the exact same but on a long trek hopping off my horse to pick the flora has made me feel like I'm in RDR again. Just wish I could attack or use my bow from the back of my horse at least.
