[REQ] Journal Overhaul

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 6:14 pm

Maybe this has already been discussed somewhere, so apologies if I missed.
I'd love to have a mod that adds descriptions to the Misc quests in the journal. I understand the design is to keep it short, but sometimes looking at "Bring X back to person A" makes no sense, as you don't remember where it fits or from whom it originated. If you rely heavily on map and quest markers, that's no problem of course, but I like to do the quests "on my own", without letting markers lead me everywhere. Hence a small (2-3 lines) description would be a great addition and will put things into context, which I'm sure people would appreciate. I'm no modder myself, and I have no skill or time or artistic talent, but I hope somebody can take it up.

It's a bit annoying yeah, some quests are impossible to complete without quest markers because they are so vague. But I guess that's one of the consequences of having randomized quests.

I could use this also, even though I use quest markers (not floating ones, mind you). The current journal (compared to The Witcher series) is sorely lacking detail. I'm constantly like, "That person is who again and what is this quest about again?" <_<

Edit: I think Risen's journal info is a good start. I like that, when you click on a quest, it brings up dialogue concerning that particular quest, that your character had with NPCs, so you can always refer back to what was said.

It's a pain not being able to see what you were doing for whom and where they were without turning on quest markers for each objective.

"Return to person X" is not at all helpful. "Return to person X in Whiterun with the ingredients you collected" (or weapon you retrieved, or to tell them that you killed the dragon on the bounty note, or whatever, insert as appropriate) would make all the difference.

At least I'd be able to scan down the list when in Whiterun to see if there was anything I needed to wrap up or deliver while I was there, instead of realising after I've walked to another town that I'd forgotten to drop off the samples of nightshade that so and so wanted and that I have been carrying around with me for 3 in game weeks.

It's for Skyrim isn't it? Can you drop a link, I can't seem to find it anywhere

Can't you first click on the MISC quest thing that adds that arrow/marker thing next to it, and then in the right hand pane where it shows all the MISC quests,
can't you click on each one and put check mark next to a misc quest so that each one you put a check next to shows up on the map?

In other words, Click on MISC, then click on one of the MISC quests in the right hand pane so that a check mark/arrow thing shows up next to that particular quest.

Does it work for the individual MISC quests?

That doesn't help at all, though, with telling me why I should talk to someone or go somewhere, and I have quests that are unspecific that way. Before I commit, I like to know what I'm getting in for!

Ah ok, I hope at least it shows where to go though, I think I have a couple of Misc Quests that I have no clue where to even go...

Yes this is what I am doing at the moment but it is unwieldy and time consuming, there is a need for a better way of doing things. Which is why some of us are requesting a mod that can make it better than it is right now, if at all possible. Surely just saying "live with it being unwieldy, just click the mouse 50+ times and you can do it like that" is not really very helpful, and not the type of argument I expect to see made in the modding forum of all places, quite frankly.

Back on topic, I am not a modder and don't know whether this is possible (or even if it is, how to set about it), but surely every NPC who lives in a city is part of a citizens faction within that city - wondering if it would be possible to get the journal to display that city faction information as well as the NPC name for random quests - that would be a step towards making the misc objectives page more manageable.
