Blue textures AND crashing problems, advice please?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 10:42 pm

Allright folks, brand new rig, i5 2500k, Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen4, Win 7 64-bit, HIS Radeon 6870.

Started off by downloading the latest drivers, as you do, the 11.10. Try to run the game, everything's blue! I read around on these forums, find out about one possible solution being to download a particular dll file and put it in the Rage directory. I try that, and that indeed fixes the blue textures. But now the game crashes, as in immediately after it starts, as soon as I walk out of the hibernation pod you start out in!

I read around a bit more, find out that people have had better luck with the 11.10 Preview 2 drivers, so I download those instead. Uninstall Catalyst, run Driversweeper, install the older version, run the game again... blue textures again! I check my Catalyst settings, notice that Triple Buffering was enabled, I disable it: blue textures are gone, but now it crashes again! I try redownloading that DLL file and putting it back in the game's directory, launch again, but the crashing persists.

I'm at the end of my rope to be honest! I've never before seen an Id game released in such a state! Does anyone have any other tips and tricks that might fix this quagmire, anything I haven't tried yet?

Sorry to be starting yet another thread in a forum full of people with similar problems to me moaning, but there are so many threads with so much contradictory advice, with some people saying the game hasn't worked properly for them since the 11.8 drivers and others saying it works best on the final 11.10 ones that getting a clear picture of what to do is impossible!

All most people can suggest is trying out different drivers. I know with my 5830 card the 11.8 drivers work great. The 11.6 not so much game was running but with rediculous glare. I basically did a trial and error of placing the atioglxx.dll driver file from 11.6-11.10 until I found that the 11.8 version worked. Good luck that is all I can suggest as each card and setup seems to respond differently. Trial and error which is furstrating is what most people have been doing to get this game to work. Very little, if any, official help is apparent.

Thanks for the advice, I did try the P3 dll though, and, as I mentioned, it fixed the blue textures but caused me to crash.

I did one final last-ditch desperate attempt to fix it this morning, by trying these drivers instead: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/hotfix/amd_catalyst_rage_performance_driver.exe

And, surprisingly, it worked! No more crashing, no more blue textures, and none of the other problems other people reported either! I got a bit of texture pop-in, but raising texture cache to large fixed it. I even cranked up AA, AF and turned Vsync on, fully expecting it to crash and turn or turn evrything blue again, but it worked and it runs at a solid 60!

I don't know how it's possible for AMD to be screwing up so badly, it seems that every single different person on here needs a totally different set of drivers to get the game working, this is too bizarre to be explainable by even the greatest of SNAFUs! (I do lay the blame partly at Id's feet too though, clearly QA were not doing their job!)
