I have never had issues with ID tech games and ATI before...

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 4:51 pm

I have a brand new laptop with windows 7 and an ATI mobile 6790 chipset with the latest drivers. And the damn game won't even try to start. How could bethesda and ID have messed this up so badly??? I have been all morning looking for new drivers and hot fixes and creating cfg files, and none of it makes any difference at all.

Should I even keep trying? Steam is really good about refunds on broken games.

Id did not screw up. ATI did. Also Ati kept breaking quake wars with every other driver. You may not have had problems with id games before because old id games used open gl 1. Rage now uses open gl 3.2. ATI drivers have not kept up.

Nope, it is the responsibility of the Devs to make sure that their software works on the platforms it was designed for. There is no disclaimer that states that this game was only designed for Nvidia. AAMOF the system requirements say that is WILL run on modern ATI chipsets. Here is their words: "Video Card: GeForce 8800, Radeon HD 4200". So this means that they have tested it on all ATI chipsets above the 4200, right?!?!

It does not work on said platforms. So id has fail.

The game doesn't seem to work at all on laptops with ati radeon cards, as it's an instant crash on my own laptop but works flawlessly on my desktop pc. Both have radeons, and it seems to be the same for many others.

I find it ironic, considering this game was meant to run impeccably on low-spec hardware such as laptops and the consoles.

I tried to answer you once already, but the post never went through I guess. Hey they got broken forums as well.

I have the ATI mobile 6790 chipset.

Driver Packaging Version: 8.851.2-110609a-120503C-Dell (the latest from Dell's site)

Catalyst Control Center Version: 2011.0609.2331.40394

I saw some people talking about turning off tripple buffering in CCC, but I can not find where to do that. maybe it is because I have the mobile version of the chipset?

if you have not a switchable graphics laptop, try these unofficial drivers :

( modded 11.10 drivers for laptop )
AMD Catalyst Mobility 11.10 Win 7 | Vista (64-bit)
AMD Catalyst Mobility 11.10 Win 7 | Vista (32-bit)

There is a command line that can be added to the stream launch options for Rage.
I have saw the command but don't recall just how its worded. something about force safe mode.
If someone will post the correct command you could try it to see if it will run.
If that gets you in then you could try disabling a few things & try without the safe mode command.

It works on my laptop with switchable graphics card ATI 6770M / intelHD3000 !
ok this is since yesterday, i've found special drivers for switchable graphics !

For other laptop with ATI cards try the drivers i've posted on my previous post.

Sounds like what happened to me when I tried to run Rage on this laptop.

ASUS U50 Series U50F-RBBAG05 NoteBook
Intel Core i3 330M(2.13GHz) 15.6" "I have upgraded the CPU"
4GB DDR3 Memory "plus faster & more ram"
500GB HDD DVD
Super Multi
Intel HD Graphics

Ya I know it has Intel HD Graphics, but it was just a test to see if it might run.
Actually the Intel HD Graphics runs Doom3 and many other games quite well.

I ended up buying this laptop:

ASUS G Series G53SW-XN1 Notebook
Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 15.6"
6GB Memory
500GB HDD 7200rpm
DVD Super Multi
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M

witch runs the game quit well. Open box from Newegg for $580.00.
Sweat rig for the price. :) :hubbahubba:

Edit: Anyone think they will come out with a Intel HD Graphics driver that will run Rage?
If they would I'm sure that would boost sells for Rage.

I got it "working" with the new 11.10 drivers, BUT the entire world and everything in it except for the sky and a few sprigs of grass is BLUE. Not shades of blue, just Blue. lol

Yeah, so the devs should make games work on broken drivers, instead of expecting ATI to fix them BEFORE release...

@jiggyjiggy Devs cannot be held responsible when a video card vendor breaks compatibility with their game ..especially after release. AMD had done a sponsorship deal with EA and BF3 so they clearly priortised performance for that game in their latest drivers. Better benchmark scores for a game that sold 3 million in it's first week sell more Radeons over the holidays.

Here endeth the lesson. Now **** off and troll another forum where you can impress people with your ignorance.

The game works. ID Software can't be held responsible for ATi messing up their drivers. There is a standard "OpenGL" and it is called standard for a reason. If ATi drivers don't comply with that standard and thus result in glitches or instability this is a problem ATi/AMD has to take care of. So I suggest you take these complaints to ATi/AMD or get yourself an Nvidia card which runs the game 100% stable with 275.33 drivers. Only the blurry "close range textures" are an issue that ID is responsible for and should take care of. But that most likely will take some time.

BTW the BF3 textures aren't that pretty on close range either funny thing nobody complains about that.

The upcoming release of the 11.11 drivers settles this issue once and for all. AMD problem, AMD fix and very very shoddy customer support from AMD. Imagine buying a new game and having to wait over a month before your hardware vendor releases a driver that can run it. AMD should have had this driver out on release day. No, they should have had a properly working OpenGL driver from the very get-go. Let's hope that they at least manage to package the correct driver this time - they seem to have some serious problems with that too.
