Really strange problem

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 7:34 pm

I installed Rage today and after having heard all the nightmares about this on PC I made sure to update to the latest drivers for my ATI 5850. Generally it's been working pretty well, except for this really strange graphics problem. Every half a minute to a minute I'll have some weird distortion on my screen. It's not artifacts or screen tearing. Some times it will look like a white rip on the top left corner of my screen. Like (this is a weird description) a bear tore through my screen. Other times it would be blue and appear on different parts of my screen. I don't even know what I'm supposed to search for with this problem and it happens to quickly for me to grab a screen of it.

Here are my system specs:
AMD Phenom x4 955
ATI HD 5850
2x 2gb DDR3 1333

No clue. I've got a 940 @ 3.5ghz, 8gb ram, and a 5850 and I've never seen anything like that since the day the game was released.

First of all, check this out: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1313822-john-carmack-twitter-speaking-of-ati-drivers/

Particular attention to:
ATI is running out of memory in the 32 bit drivers and failing ungracefully. Don't use "large texture cache" or multisample.

If you're on a 32-bit OS then that's a likely cause of the problem.

Even if you're not on 32-bit your problem could still be something related. See the following extract from the first patch release notes:
If after changing the Texture Cache to LARGE you experience a crash or texture corruption (like a partially or completely blue world) then the graphics driver may have run out of memory.

Sorry, forgot to mention I'm running a 64-bit Windows 7 Professional and have tried switching all my graphical setting to low. Still has that weird problem.

Thanks for the replies!

Anything forced in your CCC? You may also have a cached old version of a setting, so no harm to do a run in safe mode too, just to clear it out.
