Smart V-Sync, GPU Transcode and POP-INS

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 12:05 am

Hi guys,

I have these issue since the start. I don't have smart v-sync and GPU transcode options in my game>video settings. Also I do get a lot of tex pop-ins even in the scene, i.e., if I look back at it again! I am using 285.29 beta forceware drivers.

Any help would be much appreciated

In the Nvidia control panel "manage 3D settings" add a game profile for RAGE, by
scrolling to the rage.exe once added go to vertical sync and set to forced on.

There is also a newer Beta GeForce 290.36 driver out: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1294869-geforce-29036-driver/page__p__19567327__fromsearch__1#entry19567327

Remember to set Texture Cache Size to "LARGE". Although you need at least 512 MB VRAM for the Large texture cache to function the best.

AFAIK the Smart VSync option is only available for hardware with drivers that support it. Maybe nVidia doesn't support it yet?

There's a release 2.85 driver (2.85.62) that you should definitely upgrade to. It may not resolve this specific issue, but then again it might.

If GPU Transcode is unavailable then you probably have an older 3D card; some rageconfig settings may not be playing nice with that. This would be especially true if you've downloaded one of the rageconfig files that appeared in the first few days after release; they forced some settings on (such as not using texture compression) that are completely inappropriate for many cards.

I personally found that I had to remove all such config files, run once in safe mode to clear out anything remaining, then use the in-game options menu to select the texture cache size. Right now all my rageconfig contains is some settings for increasing the mouse speed in-game; there's really no need for anything else and it works just great.

Thanks for the reply guys! The 285 beta driver already has a profile for rage and I've left as it is on default. Ive heard lot of complains about the 290 beta release in evga and nvidia forums!! I have 2 EVGA GTX 580 3GB cards on SLI, so I don't why on the fly transcoding is not available!!

My complete spec
Core i7 970 @ 4.2GHz
2x EVGA GRX 580 3GB
2x Corsair F120 Raid0
2x 640 GB caviar blacks Raid 0 (game and multimedia)
1.5TB WD Green for backups

The reason you don't see the transcode option is because they removed the feature for SLI users in the latest patch.
I also see texture pop-in and have no transcode option (I'm running 2x 470's), frankly it really ticks me off because the game was working fine before the patch.
I've since shelved the game, and I don't hold out much hope that it will ever be properly fixed.

I don't have the install disks, I have the Steam version so I can't get the "old" version back.
There are some files found if you Google "unpatch rage", but I'm not really too keen on trying them though.
It's also not really possible to keep Steam from updating, regardless of whether or not you disable auto-update.
Guess I'll just wait, Skyrim is taking all my time anyway...
