Having some issues with RAGE

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 10:51 am

Actually, I'm not having them but my friend is. We both bought this on sale. I have an AMD card and he has Nvidia. It's ironic, I only had one small problem which I fixed in a few minutes but he's having serious issues. I read it should have been the other way around, lol.

Anyway, for starters, the opening FMV had a strange audio stuttering problem. It was like one second of audio, then one second of silence that kept going consistently. I told him to get to the gameplay and see if the problem persisted.

As soon as the actual game started, everything was fine. Smooth audio and video both. But after a few moments his framerate went down to 10 fps and stayed locked at that. This was with Vsync on or off.

He verified the game cache and updated to the latest Nvidia drivers but it didn't help. Also, I don't know if this is just an Nvidia thing but his settings menu is different from mine. First of all, there's no "Smart" setting for Vsync. Also, he has an option for "GPU Transcoding" or something like that. I don't have that option.

Does anyone know what he should do? Unfortunately, we're communicating over the phone so I can't look at his PC/game. I can only look up fixes and try and tell him what to do. His GPU is a GT 240 which is right around the minimum I think but I don't think that would grant him 10 fps. Besides, it was fine for a little bit then went down. I don't know about his processor but it's a 6 core AMD. I'll try and get more details if necessary.

Since I know his video card is on the low end, I told him to turn the resolution down just to check. Even when turning down the resolution the frames are locked in at 10 fps.

Thanks for your help and sorry for the long thread!

Hi there. The 'Smart VSync' option only seems to be present in AMD drivers - it basically means "VSync, but if below 60 fps then disable VSync". The GPU transcode will use the GPU for converting textures instead of the CPU, but since it's developed on nVidia's CUDA code, it'll only work on nVidia CUDA cards (GeForce 8xxx or later). That includes his GT 240.

As for the issue, I'm not sure what's causing it, so I'm afraid I can only give you general advice.

Try the following:

* setting the "Texture Cache Size" to "Small".
* lowering the resolution
* disabling Anti-Aliasing
* updating video drivers

Could also be an overheating issue. Make sure the PC is properly cooled et.c, and the PC has sufficient ram. Is the PC pre-built?

No, it's not a prebuilt. I had him turn down everything (what few things are tweakable) but it didn't make a difference. Lowering the resolution also doesn't seem to affect anything at all. His computer was a barebones kit and it had a problem with the RAM. He continually got a blue screen until he underclocked the RAM slightly. However, even though I know the 240 is a low end card and his RAM is underclocked, that same system is currently running Deus Ex: HR just fine and he also plays Metro at 30-40 fps (on low of course). I'm not completely dismissing the thought that it could just be his card, but I don't think RAGE is as taxing as some of the other games he plays. Besides, it's weird that it seems to be capped at 10 regardless of resolution.

Thanks for your help, though, and I'll take any advice you have. :)

Try the fix I laid out in my signature. See if it helps you. (If you can't see the link: http://imbacore.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-solve-rage-texture-streaming-pop.html)

You may be onto something here. Rage overall isn't as taxing as other games, true, but it taxes different parts of the system to different extents and in different ways than other games would. Given how megatexture works, RAM would be one part of the system that gets taxed much higher than most other games would, with huge amounts of data being shuffled in and out every frame, so it's not surprising that an overall RAM problem woukld manifest to a greater degree in Rage than it would in other games.
