rage needs a amd 7000 series fix!

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 3:21 am

whats up with this bullcrap of nvidia only settings. I have had rage since freaking launch infact preordered and i have yet been able to play through it all. Ive recently upgraded to a 7970 mind you this card cost me an arm and a leg. I go to the settings to find gpu transcode and i cant enable. First off this gpu has partially resident textures built into the hardware basicly perfect for rage and theres no amd partially resident texture accelleration option this is crap!!! It runs like a slide show. Is refund an option?

If you're getting a slideshow on that kind of hardware then your problem is elsewhere. I've run it on an NV GT230M and an AMD 6490M and both run it just fine - the NV is slightly faster but the AMD has better image quality and more consistent/stable framerates.

The partially resident texture option is new to the 7000 series, and did not exist when the engine was originally built. It would require a patch which may in-turn require some heavy reworking of the engine code. You can't just click on a button marked "use partially resident textures" here.

GPU Transcode is an NV-only option for now because it uses CUDA. It couldn't use OpenCL at the time because OpenCL was not mature enough; I'd expect to see it moving to OpenCL for either a future patch or for Doom 4, which would enable GPU Transcode on both NV and AMD.

Neither of these are relevant to your problem because you should not be getting slide-show performance with that hardware. There are plenty of people with lower-specced AMD hardware who get smooth and stable performance from it, so like I said you need to look elsewhere for the cause of your problem.

All of my other games run great i get benchmarks on par with other people of simular specs. Heck even the buggy as ever skyrim runs smooth now with skse and acceleration mod ofcourse. Im getting a little tired of lazy console ports make proper pc ports. I dont see consoles needing constand driver updates. There are two brands of video cards people use to play nvidia and amd. shouldnt be too difficult and if it is someone needs to come up with a solution when i buy a game and i have good hardware i want it to play.. Or is that too much to ask?

OK, first of all Rage is not a console port. It was simultaneously developed on all 3 platforms (PC, 360, PS3); there was no porting involved; the PC version is not a port.

Secondly, Rage uses OpenGL for it's renderer, most other games use Direct3D. This is a primary cause of "but everything else works!" syndrome.

Thirdly, primary causes of problems with Rage at the moment are either trying to max it out on hardware that isn't capable (you're more likely to run out of video memory first) or trying to force setting through the CCC. It's crucially important that your CCC is set to "Use Application Settings" for absolutely everything. That would be my recommendation for where to check first.
