Can't upgrade shouts? : V

I have a few shouts, and even upgraded some, but I recently killed a dragon, got his soul, but when I go into the menu, I can't unlock a new word despite it saying in the bottom right corner that I have a soul? Or does word 2 of a shout require 2 souls, and 3, 3?

You also need to have learnt the second word in order to upgrade to the second level

how did you upgraded the shout? i'm playing on xbox and don't have an option to upgrade shout,or i'm blind? which button?

It's square on ps3 so I assume its x on xbox

got that for unlock,but if I push it again with an unlocked shout,nothing happens (i have extra souls). all shouts are having more levels? though i've tried with all 4 that I have and none works.

That does sound logical, though I swear I upgraded one just through the menu, and have no recollection of finding that second word...

If it was the "relentless force" shout I'm pretty sure the second level is taught to you by the Greybeards.
