I don't want to jump from level 1 to 6. When I level up, it makes me level up again, is this just a bug or do I actually HAVE to go from level 1 to 6, because I really am not prepared.

Maybe you didn't level up when prompted? Your progression goes on regardless... Why not level up? You don't have to spend points right away if you don't want...
