Vilkas - WAY broken NPC

I have not gotten to the Companions' quest line yet for my character, who is mainly a sneaky zap mage, so he's still focused on doing things for the mage college, theives guild, dark brotherhood, stormcloaks, etc... but my room-mate has been having a horrible problem since he started with them.

Ever since he entered the map to speak to Vilkas, the guy has been chasing my room-mate relentlessly and initiating conversation forcefully an infinite number of times. He interrupts my room-mate while he's fighting, talking to other people, anything. He causes him to miss with his arrows, causes him to pick up the wrong items, the guy chases him, literally, to the ends of the earth, just to continuously force him into conversation. He's making the game as a whole damn-near impossible to play. Also, it wont let him fast travel because when Vilkas is harassing him, the game says "you cant fast travel with guards coming", even though the only one coming is Vilkas. We've tried a long list of things to try to fix this, killing him being the least of all. We've tried luring him to a giant camp and having him launched into space, or hitting him with Unrelenting Force and knocking him into the spike pit up by that mine near Whiterun. He's invincible, and he will never ever stop interrupting my room-mates every single action. Hell, I'm frustrated just watching.

Now, to avoid spoilers I'll be vague, but there's a gathering in the quest line that has become bugged, everyone is frozen in place and impossible to activate, because the event was interrupted by Vilkas harassing my room-mate. I've never seen anything quite like this, and I'm not sure how on earth it can be worked around, but any advice on how to dispose of this broken and game-breaking NPC would be immensely appreciated by my roomie. Mind you, we never would have even tried killing him, but the guy is not letting my roomie play the game, period.

As a side note, I don't know why Xbox won't let us use the console. As gorgeous and vast as Elder Scrolls games are, there have in my experience always tended to be a lot of bugs, but the console always gave me a way to work around bugs when encountered, when I played Morrowind and Oblivion on PC. We've got Skyrim on the Xbox though, so no console, and... gosh, I hope someone has some ideas, because we've tried everything we can think of. I know that if I go to join the companions and he starts doing this to me, I'll load and just never play their quest line at all. Unfortunately for my friend, it's too late for him to avoid Vilkas' ... I don't even know what to call it. There's no word for the extent of what he's doing.
