What if all gaming companies united and made the perfect rpg

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 12:01 pm

Has anyone ever noticed that each gaming company has a certain way of doing things that another gaming company needs to do also? Like bethesda makes great open-world games but the dialogue is meh. Or how bioware makes great dialogue but not an open-world game...well it kind of is but where you travel is limited.

So what if ALL gaming companies united under a single banner to make the most super epic awesome Skyrim rpg that all of us have been dreaming of? You think the world of gaming would be a better place for this? I think so. Even though thats never going to happen it would be nice if it did.

No point since this feat was already accomplished by "Oblivion".

The story is loose enough that you can replay the game multiple times with significantly different player experiences.

Unfortunately this was a little too much freedom and they struggled to provide their character with purpose as it wasn't written into the game for them.

As a result some of the major plotlines in "Skyrim" seem almost over-written to help these people out.

But hopefully this has created a better experience for these kinds of players in "Skyrim".

You will never find the 'Perfect' RPG but one day you might find the RPG that is perfect for you.

Impossible. Everyone has their own tastes. No game will fit every player.

It would start good, then get greedy and just pump out a soccer game every year? ;p

It would take everything we love and destroy it with no soul. Just think about George Lucas and how he destroyed Starwars and Indiana Jones just to make a buck. EA [censored]s out it's big name titles to people who have become fans at one time, and they know they can develop garbage and make millions.

Competition is what fuels innovation.

It would svck. Every great game has it's flaws. I am willing to accept that for different gaming experiences and stories.

To your point of all the companies gathering together, it already happens. Developers move around from company to company all the time. They don't take content, but they take their style and viewpoints and opinions. Then people collaborate by chatting in the hallway or scratching out ideas on a whiteboard. Ideas meld, good points get used, bad points hopefully get tossed. Try to get companies to collaborate? Sure, once the lawyers and accountants and bankers get through with things, they are allowed to create a generic product that appeals to most on some level but not to any on a deep level. Only a focused team can create a game people want to play, want to get emotional about, and want to experience again, warts and all.

Personally, I tend to dislike the idea of perfection. If something is perfect, then there is no room for improvement. That means no room for innovation or imagination. It's a dead end.

I don't think there is such a thing as perfection. And even if such a thing as perfection did exist I do not believe we would be capable of recognizing it when we saw it.

I go even farther that, myself. I don't think there is such a thing as perfection. And even if such a thing as perfection did exist I do not believe we would be capable of recognizing it when we saw it.

Um... that's not really taking it farther. Believing that it does or does not exist has is not thing as liking or disliking the concept. It's entirely possible to believe that it does not exist, but still like the idea of it. I do agree that there is no such thing as perfection. At the same time, though, I also believe it is something you should always strive for. Even if you can never obtain it.

i think that oblivion is better than skyrim, and other people will disagree. My point is that they can make that good rpg game, but will it be better than our favorite games and nostalgic moments of them?

Impossible, as stated. Not only do players have different tastes in games, but all those companies would have conflicting interests of what's good and what's bad in a game, what makes a a successful game, etc. The game would turn out to be crap.

Um...I took the sentence out. Happy?

That sentence had nothing to do with my point anyway.

You can't possibly be serious? This can't be achieved no matter what. Also, like OP said, Oblivion is the perfect RPG.

No such thing. You have five primary styles of RPG:

Western, such as Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights
Eastern, such as Dragon Quest and Mana Khemia
Action, such as Kingdom Hearts and Elder Scrolls
Tactical, such as Fire Emblem and Disgaea
and MMO, such as World of Warcraft and Guild Wars

These fives types are RADICALLY different in their natures - from gameplay to trends, they really aren't very compatible with one another.

What you need to do is be a bit more focused in what you're asking for - such as, what if they got together to make the best ARPG?

We already know what the inevitable outcome of such a merger would be:

Square Enix Holidings Co. Ltd. The people who have taken six years to not release Final Fantasy Versus 13, who lost more than half their stock value in that time, who failed miserably at FF14, who made a Parasite Eve game thats not about...anything comprehensible. That released theatrythm. That cant come up with a decent name to save its life, that alienated an entire fanbase, and that no longer seems to make any games at all that dont cause it a svcktastrophy.

Id rather see LESS consolidation honestly.
