Skyrim hurts my eyes ?! Any solution?! Please read!

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 6:31 pm

Hello everyone!

I'm new to this forum, but i glad to join...
Yesterday i started the game finally - 1 hour later, i realised the game hurts my eyes - i have and LCD TV and playing in 720p - not the newest tv but still samsung (bought it in 07) the game is smooth and very clear, no vibration at all, but last night my eyes hurts kinda badly - i had a few break, then it was better - i also changed some settings on the tv as well (ahh its rubbish, i hate the tv's menu, very hard to reach and get a good picture settings to me what i like) BUT!!!
I played a lots of game, and i NEVER had to change my settings, everything was okay - and there wasnt any game hurting my eye...

I googled out, that some PC users havimg this problem too - whose playing on LCD monitor - and some users said this whole problem is because of the game running in 60hz - but it shouldnt be a prob. or i dunno - Gears1 is also in 60hz only and played that for years without any problem, but guess that has a different game/graph. engine of course...

Any ideas ? Could not buy a LED TV now...

You need to properly calibrate your tv, and setuo your xbox right.

Go to Avsforum.com to learn about TV calibration.

If your using hdmi or component cables, set tour xbox video to these settings.
Ycbr709 colorspace.

And set reference levels to extended, set your resolution to the highest your tv will NATIVLY display. After doibg this you can Calibrate your tv.

In order to not hurt your eyes playing skyrim your going to have to primarily calibrate your Contrast, Brightness, and Backlight to levels that eleminate white and black crush.

The whole 60hz and framerate stuff is not a problem. The higher the Framerate, the easyer a game is on your eyes.

This seems to be same problem that had my girl. Simply calibrate your TV and screen section of Xbox360 setup. Decrease also a little, brightness of the game.

the contrast was at maximum 100 - brightness around 60 or 70 i dont remember, colour: 55 backlight: 10 (maximum)
colour tone: Cool1 sharpness: around 60-70

Game mode gets rid of alot extra processing that makes a image look good....the reason it does that is it will reduce INPUT LAG.
You are sacrqficing ikage quality for responce time. Input lag is not the same thing as Pixl lag

Go to Avsforum.com and have your exact model number found on the barcode on the back of your tv. You can find calibration info there.

Hey OP.

Firstly, you don't want to buy an LED tv anyway, not yet. Without going into too much detail (unless you want me to), you're better off with LCD at the moment. Do you know what model your tv is? I ask because I'm a Samsung user and have found that some of them are impossible to get a great picture out of without professional calibration equipment, whereas other models are almost perfect right out of the box. Most however, will benefit from a decent setup disc (my personal recommendation is to pick up Digital Video Essentials on DVD. It should be available from Amazon.).

If the screen is hurting your eyes then that will usually mean that not your brightness, but your backlight is set too high. The first thing to do is turn that right down - Unless you're playing with full sunlight directly hitting the screen or with uber-bright lighting in the room, you shouldn't need the backlight to be any higher than around 4 or 5. Otherwise, your best bet is setting the contrast and brightness using the aforementioned setup DVD (or, as a shirt term solution, if you have any films that use THX, there will often be a simplified setup routine on that DVD. Any Star Wars film usually has it). If Skyrim is the first game to hurt your eyes then it will likely be because of all the snow - large blocks of bright white can trigger eye strain and even migraines if either brightness or backlight are too high.

So, in summary, you likely don't need a new tv, Samsung are generally good, providing you avoid the occasional duff range, and with a bit of luck all you need is to do a quick five to ten minute setup.

Hope that helped.

Thank you!

I'm using a Samsung (le32) R87 model, it was made in 2007, - ps: i cant order from amazon, cant afford, and im not in the UK or the US

Btw, it wasnt too lighty (i mean the snow) when the background light was at maximum - but besides that i think you are right

Right now a little bit better, i wait to your next post here, thnks.

edit: i gave it dozens of minutes to setting up the things:)

Led tvs are LCD, the LED part is only referencing what type of back lighting the tv uses.

Older Lcd' used a tube light around the edge of the screen for a backlight.

Newer LCD tv's use led backlights instead, producing a far superior image.

And while the game on a console may natively be 30fps, your tv will always display the image at 60hz, it will just double the frames to reach 60hz. True native 60fps would always be superior though.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/ go there ragnar. Its where all Industry experts, Engineers and Designers go to talk. All the information you need is there I promise you.

Edit: Avsforum has put together a FREE hidef calibration disc that you can use. Just download it and burn to a disc or copy to a thumbdrive...then put it on your xbox...

You can, but that does not fix black and white crush, nor wil it give you a optimal image.

Other then just calibrating your TV.

-> Don't sit to close to the TV, especially if you have a large TV.
-> If the room is dark, play with the lights on to avoid eye fatigue.
-> Don't stare at the TV for a long period of time, stare away every once awhile. Or just walk away to get a drink or something. Just give your eyes a rest.

Last night it was really good for my eyes - but im not sure im getting the best graphic what the game can offer...ahhh
I also get bored googleing, for solutions - cant find any calibration stuff at all
samsung r87 2007 model - it doesnt matter, knows all the features pretty much, dnie, game mode, ecetra...

maybe that was enought that i changed some settings on the xbox system menu, but if my remember is good, those options ive changed (you guys recommended) most of the were on Auto setting - like color sheme (that Ycr04126236 something...) i changed it to Extended, it was on Standard
in the tv's menu, i set up Just Can, not 16:9 - now ONLY when im on a loading screen in Skyrim, i can see a white line, on the left of the screen, like it would be out of the picture or something - but only on the loading screen...

i may change back the TVs settings like it was, and see how is better now, after i changed settings in the Xbox itself

Btw, the game is AWESOME, cant tell how much...

I really looking forward to the patch, cos almost everywhere the textures are rough and not smooth, but the game still has a good graph, i just wanna enjoy in the best quality, so mybe ill delete it from the HDD...

Off the top of my head the settings that matter on my Samsung are as follows
Brightness 44-50 depending on light
Backlight 5 in a darkend room 8-10 in a bright room
Sharpness only needs to be no more than 10
The biggest cause of eye strain is to set your colour to either Warm or Warm2 this might look a lil red if your not used to it but thats the true colour it will look a little off because your used to cool which actually makes whites more blue bit give it a little time and youll see. Infact try holding a sheet of white paper next to your TV on cool and youll see how blue it is. Trust me give Warm a try for awhile and youll find it helps a lot

Sorry a bit of that didnt make sense lol. ment to say the biggest cause of eye strain is having your TV on cool try setting it to either Warm or Warm2 best at Warm2 if you can lol the rest of my post should make sense now sorry

Found my TV settings doc I did incase I lost my settings

Colour Space:
Red
R52 G0 B0

Green
R13 G57 B0

Blue
R3 G1 B55

Yellow
R40 G40 B0

Cyan
R16 G58 B55

Magenta
R50 G0 B70

White Balance:
R-Offset 24
G-Offset 23
B-Offset 26
R-Gain 36
G-Gain 25
B-Gain 44

Picture:
Mode Movie
Backlight (Depends on Ambient light 10 on bright day 8 in Twilight and 5 at night)
Contrast 90
Brightness 44-50
Sharpness 10
Colour 50
Tint Balanced G50 I G50

Detailed Settings:
Black Adjust Off
Dynamic Contrast Off
Gamma 0
Colour Space Custom (See above settings)
White Balance (See above)
Flesh Tone 0
Edge Enhancement Off
xvYCC on THIS SETTING SHOULD BE BLANKED OUT IF YOUR XBOX COLOUR SPACE IS SET TO RGB

Picture Options:
Colour Tone Warm2
Size Just Scan
Digital NR Off
Movie Plus Off
Blue Only Off
HDMI Black Level Normal IF YOU TURN ON xvYCC THIS WILL BE OFF

Also a few other thing set your Xbox to Expanded and colour space to AUTO as the xbox uses RGB for the Dash and games but can use YCbCr709 for videos and if like my Samsung TV you can turn on xvYCC on whilst watching a video it improves the picture (note some of the settings may revert when you turn the xvYCC on but set them again and they will stay when the xbox switchs from RGB to YCbCr709 if you have your colour space set to AUTO).
Also there is a trick that I picked up on the net that seems to work and thats to plug your Xbox into HDMI port 1 on your TV if you have 2 HDMI ports and rename HDMI 1 name to PC strange I know but it does work.
Hope all that made sense and helps lol

I think i realised now... i deleted the game, the graphic is much better, playing around Whiterun area, daylight - and cos of the texture on the ground, walls etc. outside areas, that can cause eye hurting to me, i think...
