Flickering Shadows with blocky look everywhere

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 5:23 pm

So far I really love this game. But the flickering and blocky shadows are somehow destroying the fantastic look of the game. Does anybody know, if this problem can and will be patched away? You notice it most, when you′re speaking to a person and a fire is shining nearby. Or while walking through sunny whiterun shadows are turning on and of while moving. Many of the shadows look like an upscale from an old nes zelda game. they look like an assembly of big overlapping squares. As I said, I enjoy the game pretty much but I guess I will stop playing for while, hoping that these issues will get addressed with a patch soon.

After about 30 hours of gameplay, you'll think back at a time when things were better and flickering shadows was the only problem...

Here's some info on the issue:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ee416324(v=vs.85).aspx

edit: whoops, that URL was broked

It's unrealistic to expect a fix for this on consoles, simply because of the extra GPU cycles it would take to correct it.

It looks to me like they're already using front-face culling, which helps mitigate the issue. Sooooo.... It could be worse?

I've started to experience the flickering shadows problem. Like it wasn't bad enough they were blocky blobs, now they keep flickering as if to taunt me. Maybe it's just a Whiterun thing...

And yes, the walls in Whiterun look like 2D Mario blocks you want to headbutt for an extra life.

This has been an issue since launch. It ruins the immersion of that game. I would just be happy with the option to turn them off, if they're not going to be fixed.

Console simply don't have the hardware to render them in an open word. A good video card cost as much of ps3.

This actually was an issue on ALL platforms, including the PC. That can be overcome by tweaking the .ini file. So my personal feeling is this could be overcome on the PS3. Or... just give us the option to turn them off.
