Menu Freezing or Lag and Solution

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 8:54 pm

My System has a Small 32GB SSD drive in it so this may or may not pertain to the Lag others mention.

Randomly while playing the System seems to stall or lag when a menu is being brought up. This is usually the looting menu but can also be the more general menu where you level up and so on. This actually isn't lag but it seems like lag. For some reason your actually in a hidden menu. If you hit Left with your Left anolog stick you'll exit out of this invisible menu and your controls will be returned to you. If this fixes the other lag issue people are complaining about then the issue isn't lag but rather a menu control problem. Otherwise this is a separate bug.

To me it doesn't appear to have any issue with frame rate with the SSD drive. Which to me implies if others are then maybe the auto save is causing the issue. The SSD drive should only impact load times and save files. I went over board with my SSD drive and made sure it had fast read and fast write. Some SSD drives actually have slow write speeds, and those would have the same issue if it's the auto save feature.

Another alternative is the Hidden menu bug that I have is a sign of a memory leak and as you're playing your system is slowly using up all the system resources. However, I have no idea if the PS3 has a debug setting so I can see what is being utilized or not.

I have seen issues with this because when I pull up my general menu via hitting circle, more times then less it attempts to autosave which kind locks up my game for about 3-5 seconds. I have had bad situations where the game has frozen after I hit the system tab to save the game.

Have you tried the left anolog stick when it freezes? Normally the auto-save shouldn't cause you game to stutter much, and for me since my SSD is so fast I hardly notice the auto-save feature. However, the menu will still suffer from random locks and freezes, and a simple tap of the left anolog stick to the left fixes it. Oddly the left d-pad won't fix it and will only unstick quickly using the left anolog stick.

The patch doesn't seem to address this particular issue. The user fix still works (hitting left with the anolog stick) and initially after the patch they seemed to be functioning correctly but quickly went back to the flaky menu bug. The bug affects all menu prompts. I didn't originally notice it but even the message when you start up the game that says that this game auto saves and not to turn off the game inappropriately. Every once in a while hitting X won't go into the game but just sits their. Eventually it gives you back control so that X will work but hitting Left on the anolog stick restores your menu controls.
