Location: Agantvunde Catacombs, at the end of the first spiral staircase.
Well, they don't mix.
Follwers have a hard time in narrow spaces with a lot of vertical movement.
Case in point, the ruin of Agantvunde (I think, south of Riften). There is a very narrow spiral staircase in there, and your follower can neither descend nor ascend it. You cannot tell him to go past certain points. If he follows you, he will run off after you pass a certain point or just get stuck and not move anymore. If you tell him that it's time you parted ways, he will not move either. I had to literally Shout my Housecarl Follower with Unrelenting Force up and down the darn stairs.
Similarly, in the same location, my Follower refused to drop down a slight drop at the end of a wooden spiral staircase in Agantvunde Catacombs. If I dropped down, she would run back up the stairs and into a wall and keep running. I had to Shout her down the stairs.
On the other hand, the movement problems with followers is by now the only big bug I encountered, so I guess I should consider myself lucky.
It's still very annoying. I spent a lot of time outfitting my Housecarl, and the thought of her vanishing in some ruins because she won't follow me up a staircase or down a drop is dreadful.
