7.0 surround. Where's my 7.1?

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 2:13 am

So I recently purchased a STRDH520 receiver and a nvidia GTX560TI. I also have a creative gigaworks 7.1 speaker system. I'm using HD audio out from the GPU to receiver via hdmi cable and running hdmi out from receiver to my LCD. The speakers and sub are of course are hooked to the receiver. For most games this setup works flawlessly, producing excellent surround and bass via sub. Games I've tried so far include The Witcher 2, Battlefield 3, and Portal 2. With Skyrim however, I'm only getting good surround sound but nothing is coming out of my sub. This is confusing considering I thought Skyrim supports dolby digital. Is there a way to change my sound options for this game? I actuallly had the same sound issue with battlefield 3, but thankfully that game at least had an in-game option to switch to home cinema or something similar, same with portal.

This is driving me insane. I hate to keep bumping this, but I see no other choice. I know I am in a very small margin of people who are running this game with my current setup and I am hoping upon hope that someone out there will be able to see this topic and help me. I am just very baffled as to why my subwoofer isn't working with a game that supports dolby 5.1/7.1... my setup works with any other new/ PC game. I'm trying everything, and even still working on attempting new settings. I refuse to even start playing this game until I get my sub working! :(

sorry I cant' provide any help (though I may actually be in the same boat as you on this) but I have a question regarding surround sound.
I'm on a 5.1 setup. The exact same setup I used for Oblivion back in the day (though I used an xbox then). I feel like I'm not experiencing true surround sound. In oblivion, when someone talked and I turned my back to them, I would hear their voice coming through the rear speaker(s). In skyrim, it doesn't seem like this is happening. Are you having the same experience as me here? Are voices behind you actually coming from the rear speakers?

What makes matters worse is that for a lot of people with sound problems, they have to drop their sound setup even further, say to 4.0/4.1. It helps fix things, but geez... these sound systems aren't cheap. If you bought a nice setup, you probably want to use it, not have the game force you to diminish it just so it becomes playable. To tell you the truth, consider yourself lucky you can even use your 7.0 setup and that it's just the sub you aren't getting anything out of. Not much consolation, I know, but like I said: some folks can't even get away with that many speakers.

And BTW, bumping is only going to get your thread ignored, get you warnings, and/or get your thread locked - which is rather counterproductive. I know it's tempting given how fast stuff moves, but there really are people like me who go back more than just the first page in an effort to help everybody we can. :)
